Done it three times. Always spent too much money. When I look back I wish I had not. Ikea, such simple wonderful minimal beds and at their prices you don't have to feel guilty about letting it go after you no longer need it. You can always have bedding made to fit. Mine slept with me for the first year so don't go crazy you may find that's what you want to do as well and then when you're ready to have the little guy start sleeping in his room you can decide then what decor you need/want. The most memorable time I ever had was at a couples home in the hills, he was an interesting writer she a flamboyant and beautiful Israeli woman, She was an amazing cook and they took a lot of pride in their fresh ingredients and wine. The interesting thing, their place was a one room rental that was not fancy, well decorated or even spotlessly, clean for that matter but their passionate conversation, great company, food and wine I will remember forever! I think the space should be presentable (I happen to be a clean/neat freak) but I learned many years ago that, that is not what makes a great evening! 2 boys 2 pitbulls and 1 cat, I am fortunate to have a housekeeper three times a week because i live with slobs and refuse to be their slave. However, on her days off I clean the kitchen, do the dishes, clean bathrooms and do laundry so it is presentable. I will fluff the bed but do not make it. Unfortunately we don't live in the 19th century or the early 20th century anymore. Although romantic to think you can sit around a table for Thanksgiving and dine leisurely, followed by dancing and music, it's not a reality now. I say leave that expectation for Christmas/Hannukah and New Years, I hate football but if I tried to take it away from my family during Thanksgiving they'd stop celebrating at my house. In the meantime serve an elegant crudite' early on (like the Prosecco idea), have a little something for the children to snack on and wait a little later for the dinner. Good luck!
