We usually roast ours on a beer or soup can filled with beer, wine or some other flavorful combination. This way all the skins gets crisp and the inside stay very moist.

I definitely see this working in the warmer months, when I can't be bothered to keep my stove on longer than the time it takes to fry or scramble an egg.

Now there's a good idea. We're on a vegetable roasting binge (keeps the apartment warm), so we'll have to add a little radicchio to the mix.

Lumpia (aka Filipino egg rolls). I tweaked my mom's traditional lumpia shanghai (fried meat egg rolls) recipe to a veggie-centric version with red cabbage. Now it's what I make for holidays:

Sinigang is a Filipino soup that uses tamarind to sour it.

I took time off cooking this holiday season and let my mom and aunts do the work! Besides, they make better Filipino food than I do ;-)

We fled for higher ground, where the hurricane was only bad thunderstorm.

Thankfully, our hosts routinely keep food enough for weeks of capivity!

We ate fillet minion, roast potatoes, adobo shrimp, green beans, brown rice and more!

Instant noodles were staple of my childhood. Rather than turning to the blue box mac and cheese, I begged my parents for "egg noodle soup" - instant ramen egg drop soup.

If there had been ramen here last night, I would have made instant noodles. too.

Can't forget about the sense of touch!

When I'm baking I do a lot of mixing with my hands (not just kneading). For me, that's the best way to see if my dough is the right texture. Totally worth being a little messy.

Even when I'm braising a dish or simmering a stew, the amount of resistance the dish gives when I stir tells me a lot about how far along it is.
