In Halifax, a couple of blocks from where I lived was an apartment that had three of those robotic Chimp busts, each wearing a different coloured lei and in various stages of dishevelledness. They were funny at first but after a while they were creepy as hell.

I try to avoid taking pictures of humans as much as possible, unless it's the crowd I want. I found in China it was really difficult to take a street view type photo because everyone would look at the crazy foreigner with the camera! Every photo of street stuff is basically ruined by googly eyes, something you might not notice at the time, but definitely afterwards when you are trying to get that one perfect shot to send home.

If you don't like being in your own photos, bring a little toy or mascot with you and stage photos of it doing the same things you did. I had a solo trip to San Francisco where I applied this method with a beanie octopus and it was great!

Growing up in a family of five, with the laundry in the (yucky) basement and with parents living in the third-floor attic, pretty much any corner became game for laundry baskets. There was a local grocery store chain that had its own carryout baskets (long before resuable totes and shopping bins became prevalent) and those were our laundry baskets for a long time. Usually we had one in each kids' room and one on the landing up to my parents' room.

The use of the classic Rubbermaid basket (no hip-huggers or cracky wicker baskets here, thank you!) persists today, as all three kids use them to pack for trips, organize our rooms and get ready for the cottage. In my most recent closet renovation project, the only thing that would fit on my awkward 1920's closet shelves was - you guessed it - laundry baskets. It's a great way to save money on a closet when you're not concerned about glam, and a good way to keep clothes from ending up stuffy after too long in storage because they always have ventilation.

When I was in high school (about 15 years ago, now), I bought a yellow coffee pot that I liked the look of. It held various things, was a watering can AND a planter for a great indoor ivy, and then sat for a while when I went to university. I dusted it off when I moved out of my folks' place, and since then I have used it nearly every day. It has no makers marks on it, so I have never been able to find out anything about it.

It has a perfect antidrip spout notch, and holds exactly two giant cups of tea.

The best part is, after growing so attached to it over the past five years, I found a replacement one in an antique store last summer, so I am certain that I will enjoy its use fo years to come.

I spent 3 months last summer living in a 1973 Boler which hadn't the benefit of being restored. I spent some time pulling out old wiring (I was using an extension cord for christmas lights). I wish that I had the time to restore it properly, but it was just a loaner and has since been sold.

Still, it was the coolest 3 months I've spent camping anywhere!!!

I LOVE the cat door in the bottom of the closet. That's such a cute little litter box, too!

Every single one of these kitchens are bigger than the galley kitchen I currently have in my 2-br apartment. Of course, I don't live in Paris....

For those of us living in spaces where painting is either not feasible (or not permitted) it's nice to see a use of colour in belongings and not on the walls for a change!! I'd love to paint the walls in my apartment, but I have a tenuous relationship with my landlord and I can't get his permission to paint (and can't afford it on my own).

I love the dining set! Is it vintage? It goes very well with the bookshelf in the corner.

Can't wait to see how the kitchen paint comes out!

Before you get furniture in there, I'd definitely see if you can give thhose floors a sand-and-finish. Brightening up the wood grain and sealing them will also help to make your place look more finished.

I'm also on the vote for 'paint the ceiling' because it looks like someone's stripped the woodwork out of your apartment!

Here's a good example of a cove ceiling:

You can see how the trim doesn't even have to be very wide, but it lends definition to the architectural feature.

You could also think about keeping the ceiling red, but putting in molding like that with recessed lighting to shine up on the curved part of the ceiling, similar to this:
