We have a striped wall in our study. We used frog tape -- marked it off using chalk lines first. We took the tape off shortly after we did our last coat. We didn't wait till it was dry. I have to say, I am not a pro at all but the lines look really good and straight to me. Before & After: DIY Striped Accent Wall Heels + Sunkissed Curls |

Oh, and I haven't found the darker color floors to really be that bad. And I have 2 kids under 5 and a black lab. Dirt is part of my life. I simply have to swiffer a lot. And I'd rather have that than crumbs and dog hair all over anyway! Dark Floors & Light Cabinets OR Light Floors & Dark Cabinets? Good Questions |

We just refinished our red oak floors as part of a kitchen renovation, and we went with a medium dark matte stain. I mainly wanted to get rid of the weird orange/yellow color that was previously the color of our floors. I like the light and airy look of lighter floors, but I was really afraid of yellowing. That might not be as much of an issue with engineered hardwood -- I don't know much about that since we were finishing on site. Dark Floors & Light Cabinets OR Light Floors & Dark Cabinets? Yay to Madison (another Madisonian here)! And yay to your house. Love all the personal touches. It fairly bursts with creativity, but then I also love how many things you have sourced from Target. :) Great job. Shelley & Reed's Creative Cottage House Tour |

If I wanted a simple, black or dark colored countertop I can tell you exactly what I'd get: soapstone. Not granite. But I'm one of those irrational granite haters. And I love soapstone -- it's so classic. Kitchen Countertop Preference: Get Better with Age or Stay Looking Brand New? |

Ps. I bought this table from restoration hardware baby & child. It's now on sale, btw. We use it as our coffee table and it's fantastic. Funky and tons of storage. It's a little low but it works great in our space. Kid Envy: 10 Things Grownups Will Want From Kids' Stores |

I love the room! However, I don't actually see any photos of the crib or crib bedding. I'd be curious to see it, since you mentioned it in the post. Great job! My favorite thing is the little couch and the chair. And the branch. Oh heck, I like it all. My Room: Quinten Lancaster, PA |

Carrie again. I just wanted to mention we're not even considering replacing the original windows... I just kind of threw that into my response as an example of the older elements of the home that would remain. They do have the storms and overall aren't too drafty. And they are beautiful, so they stay. Paint Or Stain Wood In 1917 Home? Good Questions |

This is Carrie who asked the question - thanks for all the comments and thoughts you've shared. I've learned a lot! I think we're definitely swaying in the direction of painting. The fact that the wood on the second and third floors of our house is all new replacement wood especially makes me think it's not super important to worry about the historical elements of keeping the wood color on the first floor. We definitely plan on refinishing the floors and I would never dream of replacing those or painting them. We're also planning on keeping the original windows that remain (I love the wavy glass and the rope pulls), so there will certainly be some old historical home elements remaining. People actually pay $2000 and up for photographic prints all the time. Photography is still art, even if it is not one of a kind. Especially if it is a limited print run. Sharon Montrose's Animal Prints On Display |

I love it. It is whimsical, but in a very good way. I've thought about doing this with pages from "You Can't Take a Balloon into the Metropolitan Museum" -- it's one of my favorites. Or some similar New York-ey kids book. Before & After: Using Childrens Books as Art |

Madison! Hey, I live there. And judging by the age of your house, I would guess we're actually neighbors. :) This room is ADORABLE. And it will really grow with her too. What a treasure. Beautiful job. Addison's Attic Playroom and Dreamy Bedroom Kids Room Tour |

Gorgeous! We have that same rug for our little guy's nursery. It has a great texture to it, too. Into the Woods...If the Woods were Awesome Small Kids, Big Color Entry #33 |

Gorgeous! I love how crisp and clean yet warm and cozy it feels. And I love how many antiques are in the home -- shows how a house can feel very contemporary but not be full of mid-century modern furniture. Katherine's Sweet Sentimental Home House Call | Apartment Therapy Chicago |
