I have a 6" Messermeister Meridian Elite knife that I adore. The balance is perfect for me. I also have a 10" chef's knife that is high quality, but I find the 6" safer to handle and that it tackles almost everything I need to do.

I tried the spray method at first for my 1970's era wallpaper and it just didn't work. A steamer worked much better, though I'd caution to be very careful to protect any nearby woodwork. The water that drips from the steamer is so hot it can damage trim finish, as can the steam that inevitably leaks out the sides. I was painting all of the dark (sense a theme?) 1970's era woodwork white, so it didn't matter, but it doesn't take many splatters to really have an impact if you are hoping to preserve woodwork.

I would add a pair of groove-lock pliers. I'm not sure whether anyone besides Irwin makes them. They have a wider gripping area than traditional adjustable wrenches, and can really get a grip on. Span adjusts with a button, and there are different sizes available.

Makita makes great stuff, and I have a Hitachi cordless drill that I've been happy with. Nice weight and balance, not too heavy.

Thanks for your post, Slangevar--I'd been wondering about the Room and Board air coil sleeper. I tried one in the showroom, and it seemed comfortable, but one never knows until a real 8 hour test. The air coil system seems like the best of both worlds!

That's great, and super that it locks too. I bet that would look fabulous. Thanks for the update!

Wait, so, how does the carrier get the outgoing mail? By reaching around the back? My carrier is in a truck and doesn't get out.

Thanks so much, everyone, for the super-helpful comments!! You've given me a lot of great ideas to think about.

I do like the white that is there now, but after 20 years of rental white I'm ready to break out into some color. I need to remind myself I can do that elsewhere in the house, though.

I *do* still need to get a rug. Thanks very much for the grounding reminder about that.

Thanks again--you all are the best!

Megan
