hi
as someone who used to often get sent overseas to live in a hotel or serviced apartment in a new city for 4 - 6 weeks, I really liked this post.
I have a cut devore silk scarf I take to put over the end of the bed, and fill the fridge up on the first day with local snacks and drinks. I bring lots of cameras for doing arty stuff. (for anyone sneering I mean a digital and an SLR and maybe a polaroid if Im somewhere supercool like Tokyo) And my iPhone for internet browsing in bed, sometimes there is no english channel (except CNN which seems to be lots of reruns).
Absolutely unpack on the first day, if its clean!.
And email your friends your number especially if you might be on a more favourable time zone to overseas buddies than you are at home.

hi there
I have some lovelly solid wood dovetailed drawers.
My drawers were sticking and required lots of wriggling and brute strength to open. I bought a small circle of bees wax from the sewing department and pulled the drawers out and waxed the inside of the drawers and the sides, now they open good as new! with very little effort. Cheap sticky drawer fix at $3.55

sorry just to add with the Phil & Ted's Traveller its very solid, I chose this over the wire frame pop type cots as I have a very active baby, and I felt he might knock those over easily.

hi
I have the Phil & Ted's Traveller.
I love that its raised off the ground, so you can actually take it camping.
The top can zip closed, which is great if you are staying with friends that have pets and you are nervous about them crawling into babys bed.
Also its really really small when folded up, as it has an inflatable matress, and the poles split down into pieces.
The first time I put it together it took ages but now I can do it in 20 mins. Only fault I would say is the nylon bag it comes in isnt very heavy duty for Airport travel.
I also have a metoo chair which is great for travelling, my favourite piece of baby kit. Screws on to most tables and benches, Ive also used it on low heavy coffee tables and sat on a cushion to feed baby. Plus its lightweight and washable. Love it.

Ohhh soo sweet, bless. What a lovelly recycling project.
If you wanted to protect from scratches - I would try some kind of clear overcoat, to hold the paint in place.

If I was starting from the beginning, I would start with a plastic primer undercoat, your paint shop should be able to provide advice on which is suitable, and probably a light sand to make it adhere.

hiya, lovelly apartment!
Ive been living in houses with low sash windows for some time. Ive found the sofa arrangement that worked for me was having a 2 seater sofa and matching 2 seater chaise, both low slung. A modern sofa still works well in this era space, as a low slung sofa has mid century proportions. I added sheepskins to it for winter (but Im from New Zealand maybe thats a local thing).
I found a geat combo was the chaise under the window, sofa, on an L angle into the room, rug to "join" the spaces and a very large coffee table which doubles as a floor level dining table with friends (ours seated 12 people comfortably! but that might be more than you need). Then bar stools in the kitchen for more intimate dining.
Also dont be afraid to angle furniture as often this solves loads of dilemas. A very large framed mirror, leaned against the wall is a great way to lengthen a space. Me I would have a small rug and bean bag in the corner where the radiator is and a series of photos running down the narrow wall, that would be my place for chilling out, or the cats spot.
