That's usually because that color is associated with a particular gender, whether the parents like it or not. It's unfortunate, but I've seen a lot of people get confused when they see a boy with pink and a girl with blue. It's like they can't comprehend. So it's easier to use colors that aren't as stereotypical so people still feel unsure about the gender but at least they have the excuse to ask without seeming really rude.

Uh, don't declaw, ever. I like my sofa but it's just a thing. I drape a blaket where he likes to dig and he scratches that instead. No way I would ever consider declawing.

I'd like to know that too. My cat loves pawing at the tweed sofa, but luckily he doesn't do any damage.

I guess this is fine depending on the activity, but it has to be waterproof (and sweatproof). A rubber bracelet with the information printed on it is a lot more subtle than a sticker. And no matter where you send your kid, there has to be supervision so that person should already have the information. Presumably your kid should know better than to eat something that will make him or her sick. After all, one wants to sit next to the kid who pukes.

I like that parents are decorating for themselves too. If you had to spend hours in a room, wouldn't you want it to be pleasant, particularly if you know the baby's not going to care?

I agree with Gooddog. Steel wool and Brasso, because all I see are minor scrapes and dings and some patina. They don't look like they're in bad condition or breaking. It would be good to identify first whether they're really gold or just have gold polish, because brasso and other cleaning agents might take the gold layer off.

But judging from the rest of the kitchen, they probably aren't brand new. And if I bought that house, I'd rip them out anyway (no offense to the current owners). The point to painting the cabinets is to give a potential buyer a better idea of what it could look like if they wanted to renovate after purchasing. Right now, the dark cabinets just make it look like a very dark, outdated, and unappealing kitchen.

At least it seems to be only one hue of beige. If you can't paint over it, use it like you would white walls. Just cover it with color and soon it'll disappear and won't be so overwhelming.

I agree that you should change the light fixtures. A large vertical piece of art would look great in the living room behind where the current owners' TV is now.

That kitchen is really dark so the first step is to change the lighting. Get some pendants with higher wattage. Then paint the cabinets. I recommend getting it done professionally, but that can be quite costly so if you are handy at all, paint them yourself and try as hard as you can to get it completely right. I just don't think there is any way to brighten those cabinets without painting them. Then paint the walls, add a kitchen rug, and get rid of those vertical blinds.

I like the idea of what you have, but given that you're a freshman I would not invest too much in all of that right away. You're going to find out really quickly that some things are more practical than others. A real alarm clock with multiple settings will probably be a lot more helpful than the old timey kind. And unless you anticipate having a lot of time, you'll probably want quick coffee via an automatic coffee maker instead of a french press (plus, how are you heating water? Hot tap water isn't very appetizing).

My advice is to start with basics (bedding, trash can, organization, more practical alarm clock) and then add to it as you have the funds. Freshman year is exciting and you should take advantage of campus events and meeting new people. Your style should absolutely be reflected in your dorm room and you shouldn't worry that people will think you're some kind of snob. On the other hand, you should focus on adding things that will help you. This might mean prioritizing the simple and boring practical items over artwork.

Also, a little warning on that IKEA alphabet art - it could be a little heavy and big for a dorm room wall, depending on the material.

I think it's easy to get too into the weeds on a topic like this, because at the highest priority is what is best for a child, and "best" is totally subjective because people are different. Some kids don't really seem to be any worse off for having only one parent. In a lot of cases, I think single parents might wish for a partner not because they believe their child NEEDS that second parent, but because the duties are so great that one person might not feel they are up to the task all the time and just would like some help, and companionship, someone to know what it's like.

We have a few wedding photos, but only one of them is of us. The others are of family members who were at our wedding and happen to be in formal wear. At most, we have three wedding photos in our house and don't display more.

I agree with you, and was about to reply to fumisme as well. In the real world, kids often have two mothers or two fathers or one mother or one father or other relatives instead of parents. The definition of parenting needs to be more flexible because anyone can parent whether they have kids or not. Suggesting that only a mother and a father can provide solid parenting is simplistic and a discriminatory.

I like Sheryl Sandberg's advice and ideas regarding partnerships. Be equal in your relationship, don't keep score, and even if you think you can do something better or easier, let the other person find their way.

In her book, she asked why women seem to get most or all of the responsibility for parenting. Then she supposed that partly it's because society tells women they must have that control and tells men they can't measure up to women in the parenting department.

It depends on how steady your hand is and what color you're using. White walls are a no brainer because you're not going to see as much of a difference if you accidentally get the ceiling. But if you're painting a darker color, you should at least put up some tape if you know you don't have a steady hand.
