This is really dumb. Who in Boston cares about or is going to buy something from Craigs List in NYC? Why get rid of the localized scavengers? How is this "expanding" coverage when the NYC list has dropped from 8 items to 3? Scavenger has gone from a post I look at every single day to one I'll never read.

Um, what is the point of the Scavenger Roundup? I'm not about to try to buy something for sale on Craig's List in LA if I live in NYC...

Um. You can't compost if you have no yard, because where do you put the compost??

Oy, CJL, lay off. You have a laundry room and a lawn for composting. Please imagine living with neither, and trying to use cloth diapers when the nearest laundromat is a few blocks away. We are all doing our best here.

LCDs might use less energy, but their manufacture produces a greenhouse gas that is 17,000 times (sic!) more powerful than carbon dioxide. So they really ain't green.

While I love this idea, I think the energy you save is overwhelmed by the energy being used by your flatscreen TV. Not that I don't applaud efforts to go green, but I think it's important to focus on scale & priorities. The manufacture of many flatscreens uses a chemical that is 14,000x more powerful as a greenhouse gas than CO2:http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2008/jul/03/scienceofclimatechange.climatechange

These are delicious. We include bitters and a big chunk of lemon peel in ours, and always make them when watching old Bond movies. I find them smoother and easier going down than traditional martinis...

"I think the challenge to appreciating his work it that unless it is well taken care of, the details that make it so amazing tend to fall away and people just see a glass and steel building."

Um, sure, but it's a LIBRARY. It's supposed to function as one. Whether or not it has fabulous modernist architectural details is totally irrelevant to its success as a building if it doesn't achieve its stated purpose. Koolhaas' library in Seattle is another architectural masterpiece, *and* a functional library to boot. This one lacks a key feature: adequate room for books. The lobby epitomizes the problem: huge, perhaps architecturally striking, but useless open spaces usurp the space for books in the building. I'm not advocating tearing it down--I agree we throw things out too easily here--but I likewise believe we adhere too slavishly to an "artistic vision" that too often is at odds with a building's actual function. Let's renovate it and make it work as what it is meant to be.

(And I grew up in DC and used the library in the 80s, so my complaints have nothing to do with the recent deferred maintenance.)

I take them back to the cleaners. We don't get much stuff drycleaned but my husband has his shirts laundered. No one has ever refused them, and that's living in 3 neighborhoods in NYC with many drycleaners.

Other than the office--which looks enviably tidy and well-organized--I don't see much compromise/creativity having particularly to do with SMALL. As you say yourself, 700 sf for a single woman is ample. (Which is WHY, AT, that you should not have upped the size limit.)

To me it feels inconsistent for no reason. Why is the desk chair marshmallow white in all that Eastern Indian color/texture? I agree with the poster who feels that stuff feels stashed rather than placed.

I totally applaud the diversity in style, I just am not sure the sought-after style has been achieved.

Would it be possible to shrink the size of this post? The older pix have been running six or eight times now, every time you plug the email--what about just plugging *this* week's email?

Thanks to you all for great ideas! I definitely want to avoid having Miami throwing up in our guest room (love the image, though)--thanks to JenC for pointing me to the Chinatown color contest slideshow--I think I am sold on some kind of pale springy green. I have the 76" Andre and love it. But like the other Andre fans, I am not a sink-in couch person. I tested the Eugene and it is much more sinky...the Andre arms are also not great for lounging against, you need a pretty substantial throw pillow for additional support if you are going to take a nap. But the couch is gorgeous and great for a living room/cocktail party sitting situation, rather than a TV/lounging situation. And the legs look fab in real life.
