I really think this is a terrible idea. These blocks are (1) expensive (2) come in only one size (3) come in very small sets (4) are handmade and wood, so they likely have natural variation and likely lack proper "snap" properties that make Lego blocks so popular in the first place and (5) look ridiculous, serving the pretentious of the parent and not the actual interests of the child.

On Lego's website, you can buy a 650 piece set of multi-colored multi-shaped bricks for only $30. http://shop.lego.com/en-US/LEGO-Basic-Bricks-Deluxe-6177 I think most kids would have much more fun with that than handcrafted ash bricks that don't work correctly.

Actually... I don't think our grandparents would be that aghast. I know a few older person who salt their fruit and other sweets. And in the third season of Mad Men, there was a scene where grandpa Gene salted every spoonful of ice cream before he took a bite.
