Have you tried the Trader Joe's tomato red pepper soup? It's actually really yummy.

Hmm I made this and it wasn't so great. It just tasted like mashed potatoes covered with potato chips.

"hungry, cold, and maybe ill" on the streets.

Tips: How To Stop Wasting Food

caliH,

I live in the Bay Area where there's a sizable population of people who are on the streets. I've taken a kid off the street for lunch and bought a burger for a person on my way out of a restaurant. Sometimes, people are not hungry or they'd much prefer money that they could use to buy something else. But almost every time I give my leftovers from cafes etc. to the guy or woman sitting on the sidewalk outside, that person is REALLY glad to have it.

I always ask first if they would like the food, rather than assume and throw it at them. And I try to look them in the eye. There are probably many and complex reasons people end up hungry, cold, and maybe ill people. I think it's great you brought this up and that you care.

Dear factoryfk - I don't have an answer or know how to help, but thank you for posting! I was thinking of doing the same thing with a fire and now I wont.

My favorite thing is to make green rice with it. I roast some peppers (just over my stovetop flame) and blend in the food processor with cilantro and some broth, then cook white rice in this. Yumm.

Thank you for the clarifications about commercially produced varieties of figs. I have some ripe figs in the fridge and had been so grossed out by the (yes, vague) article that I almost threw them out!

I agree that TJ's is a hit or miss and glad for the tip that these are good -- perfect for my favorite artichoke recipe: baked white fish with artichokes, fava beans, white fish, tomatoes and harissa sauce!

Thanks, HighCottonHome--the series looks great.

A follow-up question, then: why isn't meat compostable? I live in Berkeley, where we're required to sort garbage, recycling, and compost. I've always just put food scraps in the bin and I've seen other folks do it too. What's the scoop on this?

Hi Jenny, great question. I hope you can have a straightforward conversation with your bf, because money issues and feeling like you're doing more of the work can be really stressful.

Like another commentator, my boyfriend and I just put all of our receipts in a shoebox, with our initials on them. At the end of each month, we see what the total is, split it in two, and whoever paid less upfront for things evens up then.

My boyfriend is about 160lb and I'm 95lb, so obviously he eats a lot more than I do. The compromise is that we drive his car a lot more than mine, so he ends up paying more for gas.

We also split chores evenly. It helps that our schedules match up and we like to do everything together anyway: we shop together, we prepare and cook food together, and we clean up together. One person doesn't get to sit down while the other person is working on a meal that we've both enjoyed. If I find that I'm shopping more, then I just make a list for him and ask him to go the next time.

Hope you find a system that works. But make sure you talk about it, otherwise resentment will just build up!

I would make this if it weren't for the raw eggs.

Spring rolls are super easy to do with friends. Get spring roll wrappers (the round, transparent rice wrappers) and cook up rice vermicilli noodles. Put these out on the table with a big bowl of water or two for dipping the spring roll wrappers (rest on plates to soften).

You can also lay out the filling: One component is some kind of protein, like chicken, shrimp, or tofu (all of which are good marinated in satay sauce); I also add scrambled eggs sliced up in ribbons.

The other component is a set of herbs. Mint, basil, and cilantro are musts for me. Besides those, you could do sliced up tomatoes, ribbons of carrot, bean sprouts, green onions, and lettuce for crunch.

Finally, have some dipping sauce, like store-bought peanut sauce, sweet chili sauce, or you can make a sauce by combining (in descending proportions) sugar, water, lime juice, fish sauce, and chili peppers.

Everyone should have her own plate for wrapping. We eat as we go, fill/wrap a spring roll, eat, fill/wrap a spring roll, eat, etc. :)

Thankfully we live a few blocks from the Berkeley Bowl grocery store, which is extremely produce-centered--which means varied, fresh, and very cheap vegetables and fruits! Seriously, if you are ever in the East Bay in California, I encourage you to check it out. It's an experience.

Nonetheless, we still go to WF for the "aisle" items (canned stuff, boxed stuff), but we ONLY buy things that are on sale. Other aisle stuff we get from Trader Joe's, Costco, or (even better) the Grocery Outlet.

If you happen to live near a WF, then I think the free samples make it worthwhile to stop in to scan for sale items:) We have never bought more than a few things at a time there, though. There are cheaper and better options around here.
