I've been pondering whether to paint our bulky oak staircase, which currently has a dark and alligatoring stain. A friend cautioned me against it, saying that it's one thing to paint over a flat surface-- easy to strip later. But any kind of detailed molding is impossible to get back to its original state. I totally identify with Leah here-- we too bought a lovely house, about a year ago, and it has mysteriously horrible teal and purple floor tile in the downstairs bathroom. Granted, it's not slate, like this tile (which is not nearly as bad)-- it's regular ceramic tile, but still I fantasize about painting it all the time. Mainly because when you search for "how to remove ceramic tile" you find a bunch of people talking about how absolutely awful and ill-advised it is to try to remove tile. Thus, the tile has stayed...and the fantasies continue. Should We Paint The Tile Floor In Our Bathroom? Good Questions |

Is it just me or do these posts point to a need for a network of classes designed specifically for folks like us? How to build furniture, how to fix plumbing, how to remove old wallpaper, how to build shelves, how to build a raised bed... I mean, I know there's community ed, but I'm picturing something fresher/hipper. Thoughts? Do You Suffer from DIY Envy? Survey |

Ain't that the truth. What I find the hardest though, is when people share their "budget-friendly" projects with gorgeous results, and then they reveal the actual numbers, and I realize that such a makeover is still not compatible with MY budget. That's gotta be the hardest part about homeownership... the stuff you can't make happen, either due to cost, or the level of skill involved in doing it yourself (everyone else seems to have a talented uncle with lots of free time...). Your options for what to do with your lawn (wildflowers, no-mow grass, regular grass) will all depend on the health of your soil which, based on the weed situation you're describing, isn't great. I recommend you look into "sheet composting," which would basically mean covering the areas you want to plant (whether you plan to plant grass or perennials or whatever) with a layer of cardboard or newspaper, then compost, then straw, and then leaving it for awhile. The yard will essentially "compost" itself, and if you leave it like that over a winter (or 3-4 months), in the spring, you'll be able to plant whatever you want, and it'll be sure to thrive.
