Double-sided sticky tape on the areas of your sofa that they like to scratch (http://amzn.to/11LiEvM). Put the scratcher nearby and sprinkle liberally with catnip.

If the author had chosen more mainstream, "American brands" there is a good chance they wouldn't have been made in the US either.

I know you weren't keen on vegan recipes but I have to add Isa Chandra-Moskowitz's cookie cookbook (http://tinyurl.com/cytqov). She doesn't use processed ingredients and every cookie I've made so far has been amazing. As I type this, I'm munching on chocolate chip cookies made with canola oil and a tiny bit of almond milk.

What is the consistency of store-bought toffee bits? I've never had them before but these cookies look divine. Could I make homemade toffee and just break it up into teeny tiny bits as a substitute?

My four cats love this scratching post, and it's fairly neutral looking compared to most carpet-covered monstrosities: http://www.allmodern.com/SmartCat-Ultimate-Sisal-Cat-Scratching-Post-3832-SRT1005.html?refid=ER&mmid=48925647&csnid=0BE08C50-1605-48FD-ABAB-23ABA9E00ADC.

I also use sticky paws (basically thick double sided tape) on certain areas of my brand new sofa that they would like to get their mitts on. My sofa is pristine and the tape is barely noticeable.

The pup is a cute one. My guess would be more of a maltese or havanese mix. Bichon's have curly coats.

Porch Swing: http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2010/07/porch-swing/

(Spring/Summer wedding) Easy enough that we could make giant pitchers of it and tasted great. In hindsight I wish we would have made double the amount we did because it was such a hit that we ran out of it during cocktail hour!

Beautiful place! I work at a vet clinic and have a kitty with pee problems - whenever I hear that someone is in the club too I have to ask if you've taken said kitty to the vet to have a full urinary/blood workup done. Sometimes there is a medical reason for inappropriate urination. And I apologize if you've already done all that and am in no way meaning to be patronizing! After finding no medical reason for my cat's peeing, we just started him on prozac (fluoxetine). He's doing great! No more peeing, he loves his daily "treats" (pill shoved in a pill pocket) and fluoxetine is super cheap. He's still his normal self, just without the pee.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Telephone was trying to make the point that sometimes we should just experience something without feeling the need to constantly document our entire lives with photo and video. While I would make use of my tripod and remote to take a photo, I agree that a video of fireworks is a little silly (referring to Telephone's story of teenagers taking video on their phones, not the camera-test video that appears in this blog which was shot for a specific purpose, to test the camera). I can't think of a time that I would ever watch that again.

Agreed! @jmccourt. I am vegan for ethical reasons, not because I didn't like the taste of meat. While I now find it pretty gross, sometimes I do crave something meaty-tasting that isn't a mushroom. And since I already "eat some vegetables," I'll pass on the judgement from others.

My husband and I treated ourselves to some over-priced faux-chicken patties the other day and could not believe how much they tasted like the processed chicken patties we used to get in the school cafeteria. It was spooky.

Gorgeous gorgeous home and I haven't had time to read the comments to see if this was addressed but I noticed the a lilly in the bedroom. I couldn't tell if it was fake but I hope so, as lillies are extremely poisonous to cats - even inhaling the pollen can give them nasty kidney problems.

For those who freak out when seeing a cat on a kitchen counter... do you really think your cats don't walk all over your counters when you aren't home? You are deluding yourselves. Get over it, that's what cleaning products were made for.

Are you kidding me? I saw this on Pinterest and thought the same thing then - is it really that hard to give each shelf a quick spray with diluted vinegar and wipe it down? In fact, it probably takes less time to do that than it does to lay down some ugly plastic wrap. This is also incredibly wasteful.

I'll stick with my non-dairy milk and leave the raw cow's milk to the calves it is biologically produced for. Just as I wouldn't be interested in drinking human breast milk.

Living in brooklyn, sans car, puts us in the "european/urban" way of shopping. There are three grocery stores, two fruit/veggie places within walking distance of my apartment (and I live in a not-so-nice area), and on my lunch break at work I regularly stop at the health food grocery store or other specialty shops near my job. Since I don't always have time to shop daily, carrying even a few days worth of groceries is NOT glamorous. However, I do count myself lucky in the variety of stores and foods that are so easy to get to.
