I've never seen a mirror used as a backsplash before. Something to consider -- attractive, the ultimate in cleanable, and usually more affordable than most other backsplash options.

We have two IKEAS within an easy drive, and I sometimes use them for cheap lunch and an hour of child care when I just really need an hour to myself -- a cup of coffee and a book in the cafe!

Has anyone on here used fresh ginger in ginger bread cookies? I never had but I LOVE fresh ginger.

Like Anjali, I have Spectrum brand. My almost-four-year-old and I are going to whip up some dough now so we can roll out some ginger-people this afternoon!

Could this recipe be rolled and cut into gingerbread-people? Or would that change the way they bake up?

Many of these look like they'd be great as Mocktails -- either just leave out the vodka or substitute a little seltzer. I don't know how to mock a bourbon cocktail, though. And a non-alcoholic Margarita? If you know of a good recipe for that I would LOVE to hear it!

There was a springtime Mocktail post. I meant to try the sangria but didn't get around to it.... http://www.thekitchn.com/15-non-alcoholic-mocktails-170813 I'd certainly welcome a Fall round!

We try to use this book to inspire our kids (ages 7 and 3) -- probably works about as well as it did for JulieKohler's parents, but hey....

By the by, I hope you got copyright permission to reprint such a huge chunk of that book.

Eastofdillon: It's interesting that you see 15 of these people as people of color. I see many more than that. I've had the experience where white people assume people are white when they're not, and it's a challenge for people of color with lighter skin. It can be really uncomfortable to have people assume you are part of a group you're not (e.g., that you have grown up with "white privilege" when in fact you're often treated very differently than that) and it's rather painful to have people dismiss, with just a glance, large parts of what make you who you are.

I would be really careful about the "stairs as drawers" idea. Any stairs that serve as a primary egress should not have highly flammable items stored underneath. Safety first!

I'm glad you're doing a freshen-up instead of a full renovation. I hope you keep many of the beautiful elements of the house, like the bead board in your old bathroom and in the master bathroom.

#3 is gray! You can tell by looking at it. They also say so themselves: "They kept the old-fashioned facade intact and painted it graphite gray using RAL color 7024, made by Brillux, and then covered the “box” next door in plain, light-colored larch." http://www.dwell.com/slideshows/paint-it-black.html?slide=3&c=y&paused=true

Re: tupperware, another handy idea is to use your everyday dishes and put a plate on top of it as a lid. You can see a photo here: http://green.yourway.net/7-ways-to-avoid-using-plastic-wrap/

I picked up this tip from the book Super Baby Food and find that a) the dishes stack so nicely in my cupboard when not in use, b) the dishes containing leftovers stack nicely in my fridge when in use [again, see photo in the link], and c) it avoids using plastic such as those shower cap things that, while reusable for awhile, eventually wear out.

Another "pro" for toddler beds that fits in the "helps with the transition" category is that for our co-sleeping boy, there was no way we were going to get him to go from our bed to his own bed in his own room. The small toddler bed fit across the foot of our bed and helped him make the transition out of co-sleeping. We wouldn't have been able to fit a twin in that spot and besides, the toddler bed matches up nicely with the height of our futon-mattress-upon-platform bed.

Wow -- can the child fall asleep in that room? For my children (and for me as well), this would be overstimulating for a place where I'm trying to sleep. I am a firm believer that part of social and cognitive development is some down time when the brain gets to process what happened all day long.

I agree with happysparkle. With a title like, "An apple for every meal," I fully expected at least half of the recipes to be savory. There are so many good choices out there for bean stews with apples and whatnot, it's a shame this concentrates so heavily on the sweets.

I use Method's shower spray, but not on my shower.... I have one just-potty-trained kid and one who's just starting to get interested. I use the spray to pre-coat the little potty and the areas most susceptible to my son's... misguided, shall we say?... aims. I find that it makes it so much easier to clean up the "spills" and works wonders for leaving the bathroom smelling acceptable. There are refill bottles available but alas they don't sell it as a concentrate. There are also diy recipes out there such as this one:

DIY Daily Shower Cleaner

These measurements are approximate.

1/4 cup rubbing alcohol

10-15 drops tea tree s=essential oil (tea tree is anti-fungal | good for mold) – Thyme can also be used.

1/4 cup white vinegar

Filtered Water

In a large spray bottle (about750ml), combine alcohol and tea tree and mix, then add vinegar and water and mix again. Label the bottle for people to shake it before use as sometimes the oil floats on top. To avoid this issue, you can use Polysorbate 20 (try www.voyageursoapandcandle.com) which helps keep the ingredients mixed.

(Disclaimer: I haven't actually tried the above recipe but it certainly gets around the whole transporting-a-product-whose-main-ingredient-is-water thing.)
