I love the sense of humor in this home. The JFK painting is a great case in point and the doors in the backyard. Proving that whimsy doesn't necessarily need to be twee or lack sophistication or interest. That was what really stuck out when I was looking through this tour.

Also, they seem like a very sweet couple. Cute!

I liked looking through this one a lot. While it wasn't exactly my normal aesthetic, I really appreciated the warmth this home has and also the clever use of space and little interesting touches like the fold out bed.

I think the warmth comes from pretty careful "layering"...a lot of texture going on here. I think a lot of people forget to do that in their homes and that's what makes a difference to me in terms of a cozy, "finished" feeling.

I can't say I've ever equated brown paint in a home as fecal matter. But, hey. Everyone is different.

I think it's a nice color in certain rooms and with certain other colors, but it can be dark and a bit dreary in the wrong room.

@Mayflowers - You are kidding, right? It's someone's bedroom, it doesn't have to conform to Feng Shui if they don't want it to. I'm sure they sleep well without splashes of red or worrying about energy.

As for the chandelier, I'd tend to agree, but if you look at the first photo, you can see that the fan is way over the foot of the bed, away from where it would fall right on you while you'd sleep. The after pictures have a strange perspective that seems to make the chandelier seem like it's right over the pillows, but I think it's not even quite over the foot of the bed.

I agree that a smaller table might be an even further improvement on that corner; it does look a bit cramped over there. BUT I think overall it's an excellent revamp of a tired looking cabinet and it seems like it was well-done.

@BATYA7 - I remember my grandmother having some pewter that she cleaned with a mixture of salt, flour (yep, regular baking flour) and vinegar. It was like a paste and she'd apply it with a flour sack cloth. In the crevices, she'd put the damp cloth OVER a toothbrush and use that.

I'm not an expert, so I'm not sure if this would hurt a base metal, or something that's not pewter. Also, hers had that satin finish to it and I know some pewters have a matte finish or a polished finish, so maybe check with an antique place first to see how they clean up their stuff when it comes in tarnished. :)

I don't really like the rug or the crates, but that's just me. I do have a couple of vintage crates from a fruit-packing house near my place that I keep in my kitchen for pantry storage. I guess they look kinda cool, but I don't think I could justify making a display or furniture out of them, but I like the idea of painting them, I think.

I'd take this a step further and say that while you're "dreaming" of "the real thing" why not just live within your means, buy something that has a similar style and is made to last and be happy with that? Otherwise, hold out if you really truly want something that you can afford.

I see no shame in getting a mix of cheap, non-design sourced items for your home. The only thing I can't stand to see in a home is something that should be functional and isn't....like a broken chair or sofa. Otherwise, buy what you love, regardless of whether it's been inspired by a pricier item. If it's made well and you love it, all the better.

I didn't find this headline misleading AT ALL. It seems pretty obvious to me that the "project" they are focusing on is the paneling behind the bed, which is the "Board and Batten" referred to in the headline. That's also what they give the price breakdown for, so no confusion here.

I like the project and I think it's a huge improvement on the room. I'm not sure I love the bed style with the craftsman molding, but it looks warm and much fresher and up to date.

@Thelinus - a friend of mine just installed a zinc bar top in her house and the company that installed it said a straight mixture of distilled vinegar and distilled water (1:1 parts) cleans it up nicely.

I don't think this is dull or drab at all. A more unusual color doesn't = brighter. It looks better cared for and shinier in the after picture and the first one looked a bit neglected.

I like the detail and the contrast a lot.

I appreciate a white kitchen, myself, so I can see the little pops of color that are there, instead of just seeing it as colorless, like some people here are.

I think it was a nice re-do with a tricky space. And $5k IS most definitely a budget considering what was done here. Just because it's not a budget someone else can relate to shouldn't take away from the fact that this was a redo on the cheap (again, for what was done and the quality) that is pretty inspiring. Well done!

I think this is a cute room, but it also seems a bit frenetic to me, at the same time as being fun for the little one who lives here. I'd like to see more functional surface space where she can do her coloring and stuff, but it seems like every square inch has something on it.

Other than that, I like all the color and I think it's probably a stimulating and cool place for a kid to grow up.

Those who are bothered by female breasts as depicted in the pillow might want to try to grow up a bit.

I actually appreciate both before and after (equally, as it happens, but for different reasons) though neither is my personal style.

I don't understand how people in this day and age can't understand the concept of wireless or hiding wires down the back (or interior) of a desk leg. Let alone unplugging cords for aesthetic reasons.

And I think a makeover does actually involve a pretty drastic re-design of the space. People are so picky, but it's all about the design rather than semantics, where I'm concerned. I think it's a good makeover, but I can also appreciate how people might have been fine with the before, too.

@Ellenpasta, but why is the button there, on the interior back of the sofa? I just figured it was photoshopped. If you enlarge the screen, it doesn't follow the pattern of the other buttons/nailheads either.

Creepy, regardless!
