I will be volunteering at an organic lavender farm this June. They also grow mint and rosemary, all organically:

Hmm... I'm oftentimes the child in line, screaming for candy (in my head), especially at the Time Warner center's Whole Foods where they always have a stash of Vosges chocolates in a tempting little basket.

Elizabeth P, I saw they like to dice up the root ends of the ramps at Blue Hill. They had such a proliferation of ramps this spring that they oftentimes used them in place of shallots.

I made the dish last night, sans pancetta (not feeling the meat after a yoga class). I kept the bulbs intact, as Mario does in the video, diced up the stems with some garlic, and added the leafy greens at the end once the first three parts were caramelized. YUM. Be sure to keep some of the pasta water for deglazing the pan and for some extra moisture. A tiny splash of red wine vinegar didn't hurt either.

That strawberry-rhubarb combo works so well with the addition of mint. I made a pavlova this past weekend with a strawberry-rhubarb sauce and some mint chiffonade. Few desserts could welcome the new season better.

Huh. I was about to make this very dish tonight, having scored some ramps at the Grand Army Plaza market this past weekend. Your sausage tweak makes me wonder if I should toss in a little pancetta I've got on hand. And I agree parmesan is a must! I like to dice up the root end into small pieces, like you would with scallions, and caramelize them a bit with some minced garlic prior to adding the leaves.

I find German knives to have way to much metal for everyday tasks. They're good in the 10" size for heavy-duty chopping. I love my Suisin 8". It's as light and easy to handle as the Global but much sharper and without the coldness. It's light, super-sharp and the handle is easy for my small hands to grip.

S in DC, soy works really well with chai.
I make variations of this chai, depending on my mood, with sliced ginger (keeps well frozen, too), cardamom pods (softly crushed to open them up), cinnamon and nutmeg as a base. Last night I added a few strands of saffron and it added a subtle and beautiful depth. Raw honey adds another dimension, and it's good for you, too.

Lovely post. I, too, prefer things that display marks of history over the shiny new.

In the realm of cookbooks, I would have to say my oldest and most tattered is a modest paperback I picked up at a local bookstore when I was 15. It's called "The Wellesley Cookie Exchange Cookbook," a collection of heirloom cookie recipes by a group of ladies in Wellesley, MA who got together every December to exchange goodies. It's so quaint it makes me feel like I'm in Little House on the Prairie every time I bake from it.

The next most earmarked cookbook would be Mark Bittman's "How to Cook Everything."

There's nothing quite as satisfying as bringing home a bagful of fresh produce from the market, washing and chopping them, and contemplating my mise en place. No matter how rough a day I've had, when I come home and begin to cook, my energy level immediately rises, my cheeks become rosier, and life is good again. I turn on some good music, poor myself a glass of wine, and cook for myself like I would for a roomful of guests. It's pure therapy.
