One of the best DIYs I've seen on here in a long time. Great attention to detail. While I won't be making this for my living room, it looks terrific.

Would love to know what the budget was for this project.

That's a huge alteration to the facade's appearance. There would be no way that I would consider doing something like that without an architect's drawings, just so I could get a sense of what it looks like: how the proportions and lines would change.

I think I would get rid of the shutters on that casement window and that little shelf do-dah above it. I would try to make a visual asset out of the asymmetry. Could you extend the window box to the right into that void? Carry the board-and-batten siding up to the dormer cheek? Short of that, I could also see some kind of trellis or planting there to take the emphasis off of that swooping eave.

The bathroom floor would be the last place in the house that I would want my kid hanging out playing.

Looks terrific in the photo, but I wonder how this looks in person.

There's a guy in my neighborhood who's been doing this for years. The place looks amazing in the height of summer.

I'd take the sourcing listed in the catalog with a huge grain of salt.

Like PI, I would also be concerned about the heat from the tealights melting or accidentally igniting the plastic, and then--smelly!

I used to keep a spare house key taped to the inside of my (unlocked) mailbox. When I had a break-in, the person didn't bother hunting around for a spare key--he just smashed a window.

This just seems like a crazy idea. If you really need to stash important things around your house, the best thing to do is get a safe that's bolted to the floor of your closet or invest in a safety deposit box at a bank.

Interesting info about the switch in manufacturers. Is this true of all Danskos, or just the clogs?

I don't remember who said it, but when I bought my first pair of Dansko clogs the salesperson told me the same thing about trying on more than one pair in the same size. It's the reason I wouldn't recommend buying the clogs online.

I recently admitted to myself that I tend to turn my ankles in my clogs, to the point where, as much as I love them, I don't think I'm going to be replacing them.

No voicemail, no returned call. Additionally, I'm tiring of calling people, leaving a voicemail, and then getting a returned call "Did you call me?" Yes, and I left you a message "Yeah, I didn't listen to it." Suddenly, I'm getting another call and have to go....

Yes! More posts like these where renovations are accomplished with a lot of DIY and a realistic budget, and fewer where the homeowner just hires a designer to figure it all out.

I absolutely loved that sectional as a kid, because it was a giant couch-type platform. The possibilities were endless. If I had the space, I would absolutely have one in my house.

I would never automatically drop the highest and lowest bids, especially in light of what you wrote. If the highest-bid person did what I considered to be the best work, I could afford it, and I got along with that person, then there is the person I would hire. You have to live with the results for a long time, and while money is a consideration (unavoidably) if it is the only consideration then you are selling yourself and your space short.

Does anyone have any experience with purchasing such an expensive and large item online? Furniture still falls into the "want to see it and touch it before buying" category for me.
