We live in Austin and planted early this year. The heat has started to really hit and the crop is suffering - I had a BLT for lunch today and wondered if it was the last of the season. We've had a nice solid month of fresh delicious tomatoes, so I guess I should be pleased. (one particular Cherokee Purple was likely the best tomato I've ever had - practically as sweet as watermelon!)

I just dealt with this when we got home from a 10-day absence! I found this online and it worked beautifully -

1/2 c coarse salt
1/2 c baking soda
1 c vinegar

Pour these into the drain in order. Cover the drain to get the bubbles working in the drain only (takes about 30 seconds). Supposedly the salt adds an abrasive component.

Then pour a kettle of boiling water through to get it all out and dissolve any remaining salt. No more stink over here!

I love the beer-but chicken, and the reason to do it is for moistness, which I think is lost with the bundt pan method and with the original Staub pan in this post.

I was given a pottery chicken roaster based on the beer can model (like this one at potter crafts - http://bit.ly/azRu5z) and I get the most amazingly moist chicken (with all sorts of liquids in the resevoir, not just beer any more) and gorgeous crispy brown skin. Makes perfect roasted chicken even EASIER, if that was possible.
