your experience, Richard, is very similar to our own. we chose to do disposables for the first few weeks of our daughter's life, and then transitioned to cloth. we still utilize disposables when we're out of the house, though that's starting to shift into cloth as well with the recent purchase of a small wetbag. though our daughter is only 4 months and has yet to get solid food, i look forward to continuing this trend in our household through her poddy training and through however many more children we choose to have. blue can DEFINITELY be a girl's room color! we painted our guest room blue as well (the first thing we did after moving in because the walls were 9 different colors, but ours is not as dark as yours) and will NOT be repainting for our first-born (gender TBD on its birthday). don't let anyone make you repaint! there are so many ways to make it girly if you want to, or more toward the neutral if you don't want to support stereotypes.
