My son was 23 months when my daughter was born. When we brought him to the hospital to meet Quinn, we had her waiting in the nursery so that Mom, Dad & Jack could go pick her out all together. And he was with us when we brought her home from the hospital. It made a huge difference that he was included in the procurement of the baby. He still talks about going to the hospital to pick out the baby.

It's going to be easier than you think! For the first few months that little one doesn't do much so you still have plenty of time for your older one to be #1. I liked to make nursing time snack time for Jack, so I would make him a snack, sit next to him in his high chair and nurse the baby. Not the most comfortable way to nurse, but Jack loved that he was eating and so was the baby. Good luck - and you'll do great! Two is WAY better than one.

Being the parent of a book-worm, it's been great to have duplicates of the classic books. We've gone through 3 copies of Where the Wild Things Are and my son is only 2.5.

Here are some more adorable onesies that are great for gifts - there are twin sets too - but they are cute on their own and very unique! Washable and durable, my babies got them as shower gifts and wear theirs all the time.

I personally love my diaper genie for the upstairs nursery. I may be lazy, but I would hate to have to take the trash out every time he poops (which is frequently). It contains a lot of diapers, and if you keep the bag closed when changing, the smell can't escape. We have a small nursery, but it doesn't take up any more room than any other small garbage can. And wrapping every poopy diaper individually seems like a lot of wasted plastic bags! I'm sure you can find one used instead of buying new to avoid land-fill guilt. That's how we got ours. Congrats and good luck!

I appreciate these ideas! We just had my son's first birthday and we were opening gifts for weeks afterwards. People were extremely generous, and I don't want to seem ungrateful, but now we have a house full of toys that we don't have enough time in the day to play with! I realized very quickly that I need to develop a plan for Christmas and set a precedent for reasonable (vs. uncontrolled) gift-giving from parts of our family.

I realize that it's a wonderful problem to have.

These baby clothes are adorable and hold up well to multiple washings and rugged baby use. I LOVE the hiding panda.

First, everyone has a different birth experience and a different baby. That is something to keep in mind when writing things like "new parents need to chill out". I was very surprised to see that lack of understanding coming from people with children. However you feel in those tender weeks after your baby's birth is ok, and no one should judge you for it.

I have never been worried about germs in my life, until I had a newborn in the middle of the H1N1 craze. My husband put a sign on the door that said "Jack wants YOU to wash your hands" so that any visitors would wash up immediately.

I found that having visitors one or two at a time was best for me, and having them come when my husband was at work allowed me a minute to go to the bathroom or grab something to eat, and break up the day. So when people called to see if they could see the baby, I gave them a specific time to come. They were happy to use their lunch breaks to meet Jack, and usually they brought me something to eat too!
