Her approach is unfortunate - the comments and asides are unhelpful, and border on passive-aggressive - but I'm sure she's got some kind of agenda there. If it were me, I'd come right out and ask her whether she's looking for some way to help me cook (and then get her busy chopping onions or something), or if she's got a preference or dietary need she is hesitant to mention, or if she's just looking to be a part of things in the kitchen. Once the lines of communication are open, then you can work out appropriate compromises like "you cook the whole meal tomorrow" or "could you set the table" or "I'll use less garlic since it gives you heartburn". @caliH: Jicama has a texture a bit like a Chinese apple-pear; it's juicy, firm and a bit grainy. It doesn't have a strong flavour, so is a natural canvas for other flavours. I love it in salads; nice crunch. Jicaletas: Flavored Jicama On A Stick |

We were thrilled to find this carving board, because we've been looking for something like the carving board my husband's parents and grandparents used, and were having the dickens of a time finding ANYTHING that had both a juice-catching groove and anchoring studs. Works a treat on a turkey or a roast, too; I can attest to that! Perfect for Canning (& Carving!): Epicurean Carving Board |

How come the Hass avocado I had for my lunch today had much greener flesh and a much darker pit than is shown in that picture? is it because I live far away from where they're grown? Or is it Photoshop? (All but one of those avos look the same on the inside!) A Roundup Of Avocados |

I've had a food processor for years - in fact we have a full size one, and the Cuisinart one that attaches to the power stick and love them both - but we very recently got a blender, and it's the bomb. Couldn't use it for everything, but it makes short work of crushing ice and making purées. Brilliant as a bar tool as well as a kitchen tool. Which Is Better — a Blender, or a Food Processor? They're terrific for outdoor parties, kids, and adding to a "patched together" theme, but if you've got a nice table that seats all your guests, with a tablecloth that fits it, good plates and decent cutlery, you should definitely have some decent wine glasses. Fortunately, glasses of any kind don't have to be expensive. Our everyday glasses (tumblers) come from IKEA, and wineglasses are available almost everywhere. My mom used to do this with the base of a plain ol' white taper candle. Though, our drawers didn't have wheels at the time. I can see that folded wax paper would be pretty handy for those little nooks and crannies. Tip: Use Wax Paper To Help Loosen Sticky Drawers |

I imagine it was originally part of a commercial installation, rather than a domestic one. Nonetheless, a fantastic piece and it integrates wonderfully into the reno'd kitchen. What Is this Vintage Kitchen Gadget? Traditional Home |

I had one of those orange plastic V-slicer mandolines, once. A long time ago, when I was young and naive. Never could get it to work on potatoes like they did on the commercial. Owning it helped hone my cynical edge about such things. Fess Up! Ever Bought Something "As Seen on TV"? |

I hate the 'laundry in the kitchen' thing, and not just because they're noisy. It's not a sensible place to have a washing machine, IMHO. If you can't have a separate laundry room (my dream!), then it makes more sense to have the washer and dryer in a bathroom, which has the added advantage of being closer to the rooms where most of the laundry is actually generated - bedrooms! I grew up in a household where "she who cooks doesn't clean up", and although it's the principle I operate under, and we've discussed it, it doesn't work with my husband for some reason. Good Ways for Couples to Share Food Responsibilities? Good Questions |

Great kitchen. But is that really a photo of their fridge? If so, someone should tell them that you can store canned goods, and packets of fajita seasoning and OXO cubes in a cupboard. Then the salad can go in the crisper, and there'll be more room for beer on that top shelf! Kitchen Tour: Andrew Eric Start Anew | Apartment Therapy The Kitchn |

I'm firmly on the "pro" side of both spoon rests and the onion chopper, though the chopper gets less use as my knife skills improve. I draw the line at anything unrecognizable that cannot be positively identified in terms I understand. I'm pretty willing, otherwise. My husband and usual travelling companion, however, is far less adventurous about food than I am, which is why we had pizza every single night for dinner when we spent ten days in Italy that time. It was a different place every night, but it was always pizza. Vacation Etiquette: Trying (And Saying ‘No’ To) New Foods | Apartment Therapy The Kitchn |
