Thank you so much for this recipe! It has become a staple at our house. The first time I made it, I almost substituted cumin powder for the seeds, since I'd never cooked with the seeds before. So glad I didn't- they really add a lot to the flavor. I'm making this for a pot-luck next week, and I know it will get gobbled up!

mschatelaine:

My (American) sister lives in France with her French husband and two sons. One son eats everything, the other is very picky. Maybe because the children are only half French, then only half of them eat everything? ;-)

Sorry, but I'm with Emmerloulou. Let's dispense with the French stereotypes.

I haven't read all of these posts, but I certainly hope no one is suggesting that under-weight, non-thriving children are sent to bed hungry because they don't enjoy kale and lima beans. Obviously there is more to it than that. Good luck to you and your son.

Our kids have always eaten dinner with us, and we only make one meal. For the most part they eat what they're served. They eat lots of things that people don't usually think of as food that kids would like, but then, we definitely have other nights when things don't go as smoothly. They don't even know to ask for a back-up option, though, so they rarely go to bed hungry. For a treat, instead of chicken nuggets, or Kraft Mac, or the like, I make "Special Dinner" (or lunch). They each get a muffin tin, and every muffin spot is filled with a little serving of something: baby carrots, a scoop of yogurt, a cube of cheese, left-over tortellini, a cracker, edamame, etc. Any food is more fun when served in a muffin tin!

I had a rude neighbor whose garden carriage house looked right into my apartment. One day she asked if we could make a fresh start and invited me over for drinks. Although she turned out to be pleasant enough, she was also pretty wacky, and during the visit all I could think of is how to decline the next invitation. After all, what could I say? That I was busy? That I was out of town? And then she could peek over into my apartment as I lay on the couch flipping the channels.

Wow. I can't believe you can diagnose cancer so easily! What a great medical breakthrough! Someone you know drinks soda?!?! And has cancer?!?! Why, it's the soda, of course!

Should I experience any medical problems, I'll be sure to post them on this site for diagnosis.

Never did understand why parents would intentionally put their kids in a box of sand. My kids are messy enough without giving them sand or rice to play in. There are plenty of things in the world to entice their senses; no sense in giving them something that's sure to be a big clean-up project.

We love Baltimore! I lived in Mount Vernon at two separate times in my life, and although we're now living just south of the city, my husband and I dream of owning a vacation home downtown so we can spend our weekends there. One of our favorite places is Nacho Mama's: http://www.nachomamascanton.com/

If I didn't know, and I had to guess what it meant based on its overuse these days, I would probably guess that it meant pretentious.

I like reading the comments because I know someone is bound to say something mean and snarky. Why mention what color you'd prefer? She didn't make it for you, so that's totally irrelevant. If you want a darker color, do your own Ikea hack. Jeez.

Nice job! Looks way better.

My phone has a handy little feature which enables me to dial 911 without unlocking the keypad. Yeah, it's so handy that I can call 911 just by putting my phone in my pocket. It's happened on more than one occasion. My 4-year-old has also called 911. I'm pretty sure that in an emergency, the dispatcher will probably say, oh, it's her again; just ignore it.

I agree with the person who said don't do anything until you've lived there a while. I think it looks great as is (and I think white paint might make it look bland; if you want to paint right away, how about a color? Yellow? Pale green?). I don't think the hardware even needs updating. I think the owners are doing you a favor by taking the island; you can find something that looks more intentional when you get around to it. If the refrigerator turns out to be in an awkward location, you can think about remodeling, but it could work out just fine for you and save you some money. Nothing about this kitchen makes me want to tear it out and start over again! Great kitchen!

Well said, Kaz! Books for learning to read! Crayons and paints for artistic creativity! A piano, a kazoo, or singing songs for music time! Bored in the car? Talk, read, sing, listen to music, look out the window, be alone with your thoughts...there are soooo many things you can do with your kids that don't involve anything electronic that is promoted as "educational".

We love Ikea. But why the one-hour limit for the kids at Smaland? It's not possible to make it through that store in an hour, and in our family, it's only the kids who have ever melted down there. However, I want to melt down when I look at their website. Worst pictures ever.
