Well said, Kaz! Books for learning to read! Crayons and paints for artistic creativity! A piano, a kazoo, or singing songs for music time! Bored in the car? Talk, read, sing, listen to music, look out the window, be alone with your thoughts...there are soooo many things you can do with your kids that don't involve anything electronic that is promoted as "educational". We love Ikea. But why the one-hour limit for the kids at Smaland? It's not possible to make it through that store in an hour, and in our family, it's only the kids who have ever melted down there. However, I want to melt down when I look at their website. Worst pictures ever. IKEA Meltdowns: Do They Happen To You? |

Makes me think I should try to replicate an old recipe of my mom's. On our birthday every year, we kids were allowed to choose the dinner. I always chose "Concoction". As far as I can remember, you brown some ground beef, add some rice, and cook the whole mess in a casserole dish with a can each of cream of chicken and cream of mushroom. Mmmmm. My husband laughs at that story, but I bet he and my kids would gobble it up. Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup: As Bad (or As Good) As We Remember? |

Maybe we're just the last to know, but we recently discovered that old fashioned oats (NOT quick!) can be made like instant oatmeal. Pour the oats in a bowl, pour boiling water on top, wait a few minutes and serve. No messy pot to wash, and no clumpy, gelatinous, mushy oatmeal. Delicious, especially once you throw in some raisins and bananas and pour a little milk over it. Kids can't get enough of it. Cereal? Again? 5 Kid-Friendly Breakfasts that Take Less than 5 Minutes |

I heard some interviews with the author of the Cinderella Ate My Daughter book (though I didn't read it), and while I'm inclined to agree with some of her ideas, mostly it seemed way over the top to me. My four-year-old son is currently obsessed with Disney's Cars movies and his Cars toys, and no one is writing a book about how that is going to ruin him. If my one-and-a-half year old daughter decides one day to obsess over princesses, it will not preclude her from being a strong, independent-minded, intelligent woman when she grows up. This was absolutely delicious! Thanks for the recipe. I was wondering if anyone could suggest an ingredient I could use in place of the eggplant. This is so good that I would make this again despite the fact that my stomach doesn't do so well with eggplant, but maybe I could find a replacement? Plus, my 20-month-old seems to have an aversion to slippery foods. Thanks! Recipe: Roasted Eggplant Salad with Smoked Almonds & Goat Cheese |

I've seen French Bulldog owners wipe poop off their pooch's butt at the dog park. So no thanks to putting that dog in bed with me. Or any dog for that matter. Letting your dog sleep in your bed sends the message that he is on equal ground with you. Can lead to dominance problems later if he thinks he can be on your level. Our dogs are perfectly content to sleep on the floor or their own beds. Reader Roundup: Pets in Your Bed? |

Can't contribute anything to the wing discussion, but I make my own bleu cheese dressing, and it's delicious. Equal parts mayo and sour cream, a little bit of minced, fresh garlic, pepper, a dash of salt, a splash of white wine vinegar, pinch of sugar (more if you put in too much vinegar), and then thin it out to your desired texture with some milk before dumping in the bleu cheese. You can lighten it up by using skim milk, low-fat sour cream and mayo, or maybe even replacing one of those with low-fat yogurt. Heart-Healthy Recipe for Buffalo Chicken Wings? Good Questions |

A gift card for a hostess who you don't know...? Very strange, and like a few people said, tacky. Maybe you could just had her a ten dollar bill? Also, socks for someone you don't know? Isn't that weird, too? Next I thought you were going to say a pair of underwear. I'd go the coffee, tea, candy, or flowers route. Most important to us when buying a bed...something that won't turn into a shin or toe-buster in the middle of the night. Disgusting. To me, kids playing with smart phones come in second in the "bad parenting" category only to parents so busy texting, talking, and surfing on their phones that they don't have time to interact with their kids. Seriously, parents, get off your phones. And back to the stroller, if your kid needs more stimulation that the walk is providing, give him a book.
