I agree with NellyMom and Taishan1. Our son was 20 months when our Number Two was born. Our toddler knew about babies and was kinda into them, but much preparation wouldn't have made a difference since sometimes the idea of family growth is hard to grasp. He did great with the transition though (we are four months into being a family of four). We made a point to spend extra special time with just him every day. We talk about being gentle with the baby (which is still the hardest lesson for him atm). And I would say that he's still grasping the major change. So know that your daughter will take a while to process, but overall I'm sure she'll do great.

How hot do I look at home? Not. At all. But I'm OK with that. Most days I can be found in a nursing tank and shorts or baggy jeans since I'm a homemaker and mother of two. And I love it.

@ericaurbach-- Bahahaha! Seriously!

Living without a dishwasher seems so counter-cultural these days, but it can easily be done. We're a family of four and haven't had a dishwasher for over two years. Do I miss it? Absolutely. But we've learned how to balance handwashing everything well. Here are my tips for coping without a dishwasher: http://www.smallishblog.com/2012/09/10/tips-for-living-without-a-dishwasher/

The biggest hurdle in having kids in a small space is keeping all the toys off the floor. We are working on training our toddler to pick upon the toys he is done using before getting out more. It's a lesson every kid has to learn, but absolutely crucial to life in a tiny apartment. If you've only got one walkway, it is imperative that that space not be covered in Duplo. My do-it-yourself advice? Teach--and model--cleanliness from the start!

Great points, HYZEN. Kids DO generate a lot of stuff, no matter how simple you try to live. We've got two kiddos in the same room (both below the age of 2), and if another one comes alone, we'll have to figure out a way to squeeze them in there as well!

GREAT space-saving option. Painful price! My husband would say he could make these. I wonder if they're easy to replicate?

This horsey girl never grew out of the phase... although I don't have any horses on display in my tiny home. As much as I love the animal, my wall space/ display space is used for family photos and pictures of places we love. www.smallishblog.com

@pinkberry, we do the same! We get so much done when we let our toddler "help." Great article. I would add that plants/ fresh flowers go a long way to brighten a room and spirits!

Is it too redundant to say that there's a time for everything-- a time to do chores and a time to relax. I'm personally not very good at the latter. (Not that my apartment is any indication; I've also got two boys below the age of two). You can hate chores and still responsibly do them. The beauty of life is the variance in how we all go about our daily chores and duties. If one of us chooses to get a maid, and the other works his tail off, that is their decision. Let's love 'em for it!

We don't use a drying rack in our tiny (no dishwasher) apt. The clean dishes just get angled and stacked, like a huge jenga game. We've never had a problem with them falling, so I wonder if we need a rack. Thoughts?

Good tips! I agree with everyone else-- it will be fun to see how the apartment turns out. We're all about the downsizing. It's true that less is more; it's all about the attitude!

Love this article! You are right on that less can still be more, even as you add to your family. We borrow a lot of our stuff from friends... and then give it right back when baby grows out or stops enjoying it. Great job, and Congrats on your upcoming blessing.

I'm definitely on board with a little mess. Mess makes it feel like home. Plus, it's unavoidable with kids. I do what I can but don't sweat it if my house isn't perfect.

Or a cheaper alternative to the ones listed in the article-- I let my 13 month old bring in a different kitchen utensil every night. You'd be amazed at how much fun a whisk or a potato masher can be in the water!
