Strauss full-fat Greek yogurt is amazing. Better than ice cream, in my opinion. Everything they make is incredible. I live in the Bay Area and don't know if it's available in other parts of the country?

I've been looking for a pretty cake/pastry display stand that would look nice on the counter but also keep the cake fresh. So far, I've only found lovely cake stands and ugly, plastic cake keepers. I'd love to see some options that marry the two functions.

I love the posts that suggest ways to use up an item that might be going bad in the refrigerator, like the recent ones on buttermilk (loved that buttermilk quick bread recipe!) and ricotta. I also enjoy posts that explain how to process a tricky item (like the videos on seeding pomegranates). Finally, I love the posts that solicit comments/advice about kitchen gear.

I finally tried out this recipe and wanted to report back that it's easy and delicious. We had the version with pesto and parmesan with a chickpea/spinach stew. We'll be making this regularly. Parents, take note: it's a great loaf to bake with kids and they love eating it, too!

I had to come back and report that this recipe is OUTSTANDING! It was one of the best things I remember putting into my mouth recently and most certainly the best thing I've ever made. I used fresh Mascarpone from Cow Girl Creamery (I live in San Francisco) and the sauce was amazing. I might have to put it on every cake I make from now on. . .

It must be fun to read all of these fawning comments. I have no business trying to win something so lovely when I have such a small, dumpy kitchen (with no storage space). But I do love cooking and these pieces would be so fun to work with. . . Sigh.

After a long day of taking care of the kiddos, I can imagine lounging on this chair with a glass of wine and a great book. This is one lovely chair- and I bet it feels as good as it looks!

My mother is European and bought my first son a stainless steel feeding set from the Netherlands. This was a family (or local) tradition when she was growing up and she still has her first plate/bowl. My son's set includes a shallow bowl/plate, a cup and utensils.

It was the best present he has ever received. It is beautiful, will last for years, non-toxic and we use it three times a day. I don't know why these sets aren't more popular in the U.S., especially because people know that eating off of plastic isn't healthy. We haven't been able to find a set as nice as my son's online and grandma had to go to a jewelry store in the Netherlands to get one for our second son, who was born recently. She's a flight attendant, so that wasn't a real hardship for her. For those of you who won't be in the Netherlands before Christmas, here's a link to a site we've ordered from but I'm sure you can find others: http://www.silversuperstore.com/baby/tantalyn.html.

We live in San Francisco and have the San Francisco version. The text is awful but my 2.5 year old loves the art. We just talk about the pictures and he has learned so much about our city and its landmarks from the book.

I am the kind of person who always turns to books to figure out how to do things so I buy and read a lot of parenting books. A friend once made me feel a bit insecure about it, saying that she just relies upon instinct. I talked it over with a friend who is a therapist and she reassured me that what people call a parenting instinct is just replicating what one's parents did. So, if you like how your parents raised you, that's fine. If you don't, turning to books isn't such a bad idea. She also told me that one of the largest causes abusive behavior towards children is expecting them to act in a way that is not developmentally appropriate and that learning about child development can help prevent this.

My parents were quite abusive and neglectful so the last thing I want to do is parent like them. So I'm turning to books to learn about child development and to help me explore how I want to approach raising my kids. Favorites include:

Unconditional Parenting
The Emotional Life of the Toddler
Simplicity Parenting
Positive Discipline
Our Babies, Our Selves

I also love the website ahaparenting.com, which really resonates with my approach to parenting.

Like GG_MS, pre-baby I intended to keep the toys and baby clutter out of the living room. I recall being horrified when visiting my inlaws, who had turned the dining room into a playroom with wall to wall toy bins. That place felt like total chaos and I found it overwhelming.

Then I had a baby and remembered that my attitude was coming from my parents, who made my childhood miserable by insisting that the house always be perfectly clean and organized. They stressed me out and yelled if there was a single dish in the sink and made it clear that their priority was a clean house, not a happy kid. Now when I visit homes where a toddler lives that is perfect, I feel bad for the kid because I remember how that felt.

I've never been fanatic about cleaning my house (my parents traumatized me a bit) but I did realize at some point that I was always apologizing to guests if things were messy. Then I decided that we all have priorities and we need to own them. Having a perfect house isn't a priority for me. Spending quality time with my family and friends, having a fun, loving, warm home and spending time cooking or reading or exercising in my "free time" are my priorities. I do try to keep the house mostly organized and we do clean up toys with my toddler every night before bedtime but I really don't worry if everything isn't picture perfect or ready for guests to drop in. We have a bin of toys and stacks of books in the living room and a toy kitchen in our dining room. If I'm going to have one clean room, it has to be the kitchen because we cook a lot and dirt/mess in the kitchen makes that difficult. Beyond that, I'm focusing on enjoying my toddler.

I made this for dinner tonight and am not sure that the vinaigrette is necessary. Once I poured it over the oranges, I basically had orange soup. I think the salad would be better with a drizzle of olive oil. Also, this recipe is classified as "quick" and it's not. Segmenting seven oranges takes a while. Overall, I like the flavor combination but don't feel the result was worth the effort.

This cake sounds delicious but I'm sad to report that it wasn't great. I made it for Thanksgiving for a group of people who love elder flower and lemon and none of us were wowed by it. I guess I expected it to be more luscious and rich but it came out kinda dry and perhaps not lemony enough. The elderflower whipped cream was almost good enough to rescue it but I won't be making it again.

These cups are gorgeous and I'd love to get some BUT if the paint comes off that easily, can't it come off when a toddler is drinking/licking/chewing from it? Am I just being paranoid?
