With my son we started at about 2 years old just by asking him to sit on the potty while he waited for his bath to be filled. The "running water" theory only worked about 30% of the time, but it gave us a chance to praise him when he did a wee.
At 2.5 he started to tell us when he had done a wee in his nappy so we stepped it up a bit, taking him every couple of hours to sit on the toilet. The problem with this was we were trying to do it on our timetable and not helping him to recognise the sensation of needing to "go". He started getting frustrated about sitting on the toilet so often.
We had to bite the bullet and just let him have a few accidents. Once we shifted to this approach it only took a few days for him to decide he didn't like the sensation of wet pants more than he didn't like having to sit on the toilet and he started telling us in advance when it was time.
We still had some accidents on the way to the toilet for a while because he wasn't allowing enough time, but he was well and truly trained before his third birthday.
I found using undies with his favourite cartoon characters a big help. He got to choose which character he wanted to wear each time and we would say "don't let Lightning McQueen get wet".

I would be worried less about noise and more about safety as your little one learns to walk/climb. What is the risk they could climb over or under the balustrade once they reach toddler stage? Can you do enough to safeguard the space?
In my experience babies get used to their environment fairly quickly - if you aren't precious with them about noise they'll sleep through most things.

I agree an ugly decor gift is worse than an ugly clothing gift. I might wear an ugly dress when my Mum comes for dinner so she can see me "loving" her gift, but I am very particular about what I want on display in my home. To the point that I don't even let my husband buy a watering can without my approval.

Having said that, I think items that are practical and not expected to be on display all the time are okay. EG: placemats and serving ware. Like the dress I might just bust these out for dinner with dear old Mum.

I would start by centering the bed to the windows. Then lean a full length mirror in a cool frame against the wall to balance the windows.

I think there's a lot to be said for working with the things you can't change about an apartment vs trying to ignore them. While I like all your colourful accessories and especially your artwork, they just don't work here.

I hate doing things twice so for me rushing in and completely arranging my kitchen on the first night or hanging artwork in the first week is a no no. When I pack I keep a box register so I know where to find everything. Then I take about a month to get completely unpacked so I can consider where the best place is for everything and get it right the first time.

My original idea was to install a couple of low shelves for displaying things that make you happy and a hook at the top to hang an indoor plant. I love having greenery inside it makes everything feel fresh and calm.
I also like the idea already suggested of installing a mirror at the back and a low shelf for applying make-up, but with the addition of some lighting.

Those fish seem almost to be moving. Its the best wall decal I've seen. Everything about this space is incredible - curtains, rocker, toddler chair, seahorse - everything. Love it!
