agreed. I prefer my blackberries in a iced cocktail. My favorite is the blackberry bramble- I've developed a recipe that I posted here: http://gnoshings.wordpress.com/2010/05/03/the-blackberry-bramble/

As for grains, I toast farro before cooking and it's a wonderful addition to the chewy texture that I love. Too bad I have to order farro over the internet or I'd be eating it much more often.

because we're saving it for more delectable meals of the day?

I know in Ye Olden Times, you could preserve beef/pork with salt, so you could kill the animal some time before and then serve up the meat whenever. I'm pretty sure you can't do that with chicken, so if you wanted chicken for breakfast you'd have to go kill the animal that morning, and let's be honest, no one wants to do that before they've had their coffee :)

Ditto on great timing! My mom does not love sweets nor chocolate (gasp) so I've been having difficulty meal planning for mother's day. I think I found my inspiration!

I have 4 baby bundt cake pans (like 4 inches across) that are perfect for making single/double serving cakes (rather than ONE ENORMOUS CAKE, which is always difficult to manage at parties). I have to say I love personal servings and plating rather than buffet style as it allows you to control the presentation closely. I think it really brings the "fancy" to the dessert!

One thing that always tripped me up as a new baker was butter. Cold, room temperature, melted-- they all have different effects on the product! So pay attention to the recipe and if it calls for room temp butter, break out a stick and leave it alone for an hour (or cut into pats and wait 20 minutes!). I wish I had known this so much earlier!
