Wow, what a great house! I live in the same neighborhood - had no idea anybody so cool lived here. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for this house in real life!

Tmoore, they're equilateral triangles so you wouldn't be able to just cut the squares in half. But I like where you're going with that idea!

We have a white slipcovered IKEA sofa (Karlanda?) and a 20 month old boy. I thought I would have no problem just laundering sections as needed, but... The covers are a pain to get off and on, and the covers for the frame can only be removed if the sofa is dismantled. So we have it draped in bedspreads. Ugly but true. Even uglier is the truth that 9 out of 10 spills are caused by yours truly. There's been way more red wine and black coffee to contend with than banana smears or blueberry spots. So maybe we just aren't cut out to be white sofa people anyway.
So I would say if you go through with it, check to see how easy it is to get those covers off and on.

I painted mismatched (thrifted) chairs white for our dining table, and reupholstered all the seats with burlap. At first I thought it was a bad idea, as it shed a lot. But too lazy to change them out, 4 years later they still look great and have stopped shedding - they have that nice smooth patina that old burlap gets.
I wonder if there is a way to age new burlap? I can't imagine wanting a pillow made from fresh new stiff scratchy burlap on my sofa!

The first thing I saw also was the futon. If you don't want to spend much money, you could move the quilt from the bed to the futon, tuck it around the cushions and add a collection of colorful patterened throw pillows, and find a simple neutral blanket or spread for the bed.

My gram used to send my mom $5 to buy me swiss cheese for my birthday. I guess one when I was about 4, I said "thwith cheeth" and as a result was forced to eat it every birthday. Did I thay I like thwith cheeth? Becauth I don't.

Love the recording baby cries idea. And I think my 18-month-old would go bonkers over a box of raisins.

I was just reading "Goodnight Maisy" to my son yesterday, and noticing her quilt. It's almost the same!

We have this Vtech "laptop." http://www.amazon.com/VTech-80-073800-Vtech-Learning-Laptop/dp/B000M3QJPU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1291672397&sr=8-1
Our 18-month-old uses it like a jukebox - he loves to be able to choose what song to listen and dance to.
Now, if someone could come up with a baby-friendly "jukebox" interface that you could plug your iphone into, so your child could choose his/her own *real* music, that would be worth every penny.

This is exactly what I am planning on doing to our existing fireplace for christmas for my 17-mo-old. We currently have an ugly babygate across it. I'm having my dad make a plywood front with new molding to cover the existing (ugly) molding, with a foot on the bottom that will allow it to wedge in and be easily removed by adults if we actually want to make a fire. The front will be a magnetic chalkboard, and I'm going to make a feltboard with magnetic backing that we can use on it as well. I was going to submit before and after pics, but I guess this beat me to the punch! Oh well.

Late to comment, but @1607, it's true that studies have found young/baby boys who are exposed to a lot of lavender are more likely to grow excess breast tissue and show other signs of an estrogen imbalance.

My 14 month old son's current favorite to hear, and that I love to read, is Little Blue Truck. I can't wait until he's old enough for The Gruffalo. That one is so much fun.

Love the photo. Reminds me of one of my favorite childhood memories - when I became too old for naps, my mom would send me outside with an armful of books and an old quilt from my grandmother and I lay under a big tree and read and stare up at the sky. We called them "booknaps."

You can also do this with wool sweaters, then felt them in the washing machine. They get smaller, but they're very sturdy!

Messages Left Behind in Old Homes

It has been a rare camping trip that I haven't had to bum a can opener from a neighbor...
One time I wore my swimsuit and forgot to pack any bras. That's not something you can really borrow from your fellow backpacker. :)
On our most recent trip to Mount Rainier, I forgot spoons. My husband made tracks to arrive by closing time at the general store, and heard "Handle With Care" by the Traveling Wilburys on the radio on the way home. He arrived back at the site with spoons, singing that song, and now every time we hear it we think of that night.
