Be careful with nutritional yeast, it has properties similar to MSG. The most notable downside to this is that people who get migraines may want to shy away from nutritional yeast.

This article is spot-on; root vegetables and gourds puree excellently into thick, creaminess. Also, there are plenty of vegan breads (ones that are marketed as "peasant" or "rustic" will often be vegan) that you can de-crust and puree into your soup which will give it some body and richness. I also second the olive oil comment.

I got some from Bed Bath & Beyond, but my favorite place to looks is at the thrift store/Salvation Army; they really have some pretty ones there that you know will be sturdy. The person who suggested Fishs Eddy is also right on. I love that store!

Perhaps more basic than making an omelet, I think people should know how to scramble eggs without making them a crunchy mess (some people like them that way, but they should at least know). I also second being able to make rice (or some grain) on the stove in a pot. People should also know how to select and roast vegetables, and how to select fruit. I feel like this covers the bases for not getting scurvy or being constipated all the time. Keepin' it real.

As with any hobby or passion, it's an easier start point to find someone who shares it with you. Certainly encourage and expose him to it in as many positive ways as possible!

However, the main key is in how Mr. Perfect treats you when you talk about food or go on these restaurant expeditions. It sounds like you're a food enthusiast and this is a big part of your life; it may sound weird to some, but for people like you (and me), food (cooking AND eating) is a hobby and passion. So think of it as your hobby and passion. Is he supportive of it? Does he try to get involved to understand where you're coming from? Or does it annoy him? Does it get in the way? Does he roll his eyes when you rave about a new ingredient, or does he think it's cute how excited you get?

It's not whether he is, will be, or won't ever be as enthusiastic as you are about food, it's whether or not he's supportive and interested in what you love about your beloved hobby that will make or break the relationship.

(But if he doesn't like garlic or onions, dump him. I speak from experience)

I'm not a giant neat freak or anything, but it seems to me you'd want to empty these out and clean them every so often (especially if you do end up with bugs), and that seems like it would be a huge pain. Very pretty, though.

I've been lurking for a long time on this blog and never commented, but I felt compelled to register just to comment on this.

A Boston cooler is NOT just ginger ale and vanilla ice cream. A Boston cooler is VERNORS ginger ale and vanilla ice cream. A seemingly-small, but important distinction. Vernors has a more intense ginger flavor and is a lot less sweet than modern ginger ales. (But not quite Jamaican ginger beer intensity)

Furthermore, it's not a float, but a drink. You're supposed to blend the ice cream with the Vernors, (either in a shake-making blender, or regular blender), and it needs to be kept cold, so it is the consistency of a shake. It originated in Detroit, MI, where Vernors originated as well.

Also, Halo Burger still has the best Boston Coolers ever.
