Maybe you have a neighbour or co-worker who is single too? Buy one together, half it. Or why not freeze half of it? A good bread should be no problem to freeze.

for one, it doesn't seem very practical for use and on the other hand, its a lot of crayon, isn't it? Doughnut-shaped soap though would be cute & practical.

if you are living somewhere small, you have to do what works. Normally though I only would have cooking books in the kitchen, unless the kitchen is some giant dinning-living-cooking room.

@KIRSTENWI: They cabinets weren't wood & old, so probably painting them would be difficult and they might not be in very good condition. Painting cabinets is great for high-end wood ones, those aren't.

I never have problems using the lemons- I use way more juice than zest anyway! Try adding the juice of a lemon as well as some fresh mint to water- nice refreshing summer drink. Lemon juice is great to add a little bit of acid to many dishes, I especially like it with green vegetables such as spinach or creme based dishes- makes them a little bit lighter. Lemon juice, olive oil and salt make a nice simple salad sauce for young spinach.

I feel myself lucky that I have never ever heard of peas in Carbonara. Or onions. Till now that is. Must be an American thing just like Ricotta in lasagna. Where do all this crazy ideas come from? They just don't make any sense.

Garlic! Lemons, I use them for so many things. Oh, and carrots. They keep long & are very variable. They make a green salad more interesting and are good for whenever I improvise with some leftover veggies.

of course you could paint the cabinets and tile- but its a lot of work, so do you really want to invest that much time in something that you will only have for one year? Instead use the time to plan the remodel.

Ehm, I will remove empty cups or mugs and trash, put the pencils and similar things which are lying around away & put my books, papers and binders into stacks and maybe dust. Removing keyboard & mouse seems totally unnecessary. Probably whoever is visiting you will be confused and ask "What the hell happened with your keyboard? Is it broken?"

I really like the look of built-in bookcases which cover a whole wall and inside them nothing but books on them, not sorted in any specific way (like the picture). I think it gives it the feeling of a library, which I love (as a fellow bookworm) and also has something grand, like, as if you had an english country manor with a library instead of a small apartment! I don't think it looks cluttered, partly because I love books, partly because the amount and if you just have them side by side, the repetition kind of creates a pattern for me and is less messy to look at then random things (also, if the bookcase is symetrical, that helps.) Well, built-in bookcases are expensive, but people have done great things with Ikea items like billy or expedit,

Those are just some examples, google & search ikea hacker for more and create something that looks custom & I think it will look great!
I wouldn't necessarily mix the books with other stuff- it can look great if you have great things & taste & can style bookshelves, but it might just end up looking cluttered & messy. Just books is in my opinion easier.

Living with Lots and Lots (and Lots) of Books? Good Questions

@Mary and Felipe: statistics please that says that more than fifty percent of South Africans can afford a cleaning lady (actually, >80% would more be "almost everyone"). But I kind of doubt that. Especially with an unemployment rate of 25%, plus, I doubt that even most of working people can afford cleaning ladies (or can your cleaning lady afford a cleaning lady? Probably not.) Your comment seems really insensitive and not in touch with reality.
I do hope, that at least your pay your cleaning lady well instead of taking advantage of the high level of unemployment and poverty which will make it possible for people who couldn't afford to employ a fair paid cleaning lady to employ someone for a pittance and boast on internet sites how cool it is to live in a country where everybody can afford a cleaning lady!

I am questioning if it really is a generational issue or more a age issue. And yes, thats a difference. Generation X and Y might pick up gardening too, when getting older, who knows. Probably forty years ago people were complaining that the baby boomers weren't gardening too.

So many possibilites! Many sauces can be prepared ahead, then you have only to quickly cook pasta or rice or whatever. Minestrone or Vegeterian Chili are good options as well.
@meatballs&milkshakes: hummus means chickpeas. so your edamame dip is definitely no hummus. I understand why you call it that, but it just sounds silly.
