i love that you are a happy, expanding family regardless of your surroundings! my ideas are an ikea kids kura bed turned around bunk bed style. still low enough for your ceilings but gives you added space for using underneath. you could then put a crib underneath in an "L" shape so that half of it is under the bed and half is uncovered. or store all the toys there, whatever. and i agree with the first comment, put your bed in the alcove, a cozy moroccan hideaway, and move the kids to a shared space (when baby is a bit older.) i have seen a few of these kura beds quite cheap on craigslist.

2nd crib worked for us too. Very worth it. You don't need any added sleep disturbance or worries and you dont want to give a 14 month old that much freedom, its dangerous.

yes i agree with bepsf, a good filter is important, who knows what your pet brings in. our dyson animal is awesome. it has a washable filter(!) as well as the turbine brush system and gets the white pet hair off our brown wool rug very easily.

we have this same problem! tried the wax and tried bending the plastic runners. the problem we have is that they bend inwards towards eachother so that they grip the tubs extra tight. we thought they might get better with use, but its been maybe 2 years now. hope you find something that works.
