I do think good appliances make a kitchen, but stick to a budget. We put in an affordable flooring and I'm happy we did. It left us with more money for countertops, a new sink, ect.

We are redoing our kitchen and considered it too (I blogged about it: http://www.lifeonchurchill.com/2012/04/kitchen-lighting-ideas.html ) the thing is, you have to consider ceiling height. We have 8 foot ceilings and no island so pendants were a no go. We ended up with flush mount lights from restoration hardware

we just put in black and white flooring. I think its so classic, especially if the home is 1940s-60s. http://www.lifeonchurchill.com/2012/05/transformed-kitchen-nook.html

We really like this idea and considered it for our home a few years ago. Our kids are more contained in booth seating (they are preschoolers)

one that you don't have to take a loan out on (in my opinion). in our case we purchased butcherblock from ikea and will be installing it over the next few weeks. also, from a neighborhood perspective what is expected? we live in the city and most homes near ours would have laminate. so butcherblock will be an upgrade.
