Not gonna lie. I did this.
Hardwood floors and the felt pads just would NOT stay on the chairs. My solution? Felt pads and then baby socks. Ghetto? Maybe. Save my floor? Definitely.

I cannot look at one of those foyers in the before picture without thinking "how do you clean those windows?"

I LOVE this change. Based on the window next to the door, I highly doubt the "new" foyer is all dark and dungeon-like and even if it was, so what? How much time do you spend in your foyer? It's a great use of otherwise wasted space.

I was firmly in the "wallpaper borders are the WORST" camp until I bought the house I now live in. When we bought it, I knew I hated every single paint choice the previous owners made. However, in the living room there was a border wallpaper of a damask type pattern that was raised in the wallpaper. The cream and peach they had painted above and below the wallpaper was horrid, but a coat of charcoal paint over the whole wall (wallpaper too) and I just love the border now.

Not sure what any of that has to do with the original post, other than that if you look hard enough and the room is right, borders can work.

Regardless of what you go with, ask your landlord. They may be surprisingly easy to work with.

My dad always told me that when you paint the walls yourself you're saving money on labor--buy the good paint.

I live in what I would consider the world's worst apartment for noise (right on the intersection of two major Chicago streets, one of which is used for semis getting to the nearby expressway...oh, and halfway between a police station and a fire station too. And on top of a bar.)
I actually started using an iphone app for sleeping--there are tons out there. White noise doesn't do it for me...it does nothing to mask the rumbles of a passing semi. Not enough low frequency. Pink works much better in my opinion.
Falling asleep with the TV on actually helps me--it's like *my* noise is better to have on than other noise? I don't know, but it works for me.

As others have said, HEAVY curtains. Mass stops sound.

And with time you do notice it less. Not to say it gets to the point where it's acceptable, though. I'm moving as soon as this lease is up.

Those bags in the photo...anyone know where to find them in America? I bought one at a 1 Euro store in Ireland and have used it to move soooo much stuff, but it's finally broken. I'm dying for some more, but have searched to no avail.

You know those cheap flimsy cutting boards? Those work too. And they're clear. Remove, clean, replace. Works better for me than taking the shelves out because while mine are technically removable, they're not easy to get out.

The thought of the amount of work that had to go into getting that red paint off makes me cringe. I couldn't do it!!
Well worth the work, though. It's lovely.
