AFFORDABLE?!?!? In my world, $1800 for a rug isn't affordable.

Laure I am going through the exact same thing right now. I too am leaving a relationship and my beautiful home behind. The thing I've realized while packing is that I'm not losing my home rather my home is always with me. I've surround myself with items I love and cherish and am excited to go to a new place. I feel the new year and new home are going to be fantastic and I wish you all the luck. Stay strong!

@terrym2442: You can just buy the mattress, you don't have to purchase the mattress boxspring set. You just have to ask!

A Year in Bed Project

We have a Sleepy's Dormia memory foam mattress. Although it does smell for a week or so, it does go away. It is a bit warmer than other mattresses (previously Sealy posturpedic) but I find that we are able to either use less blankets in the summer, and are able to turn the heat lower in the winter.

My back and neck have never felt better since switching to a memory foam mattress.

Thanks for doing this study; I can't imagine have to move a new bed in/out every month!!!

Before & After: My Dramatic Table Overhaul

You want honest feedback here it is.

The first photo of the tour shows the outside. While I love stone houses I do not love trash cans, cheap platic lawn furniture and leaning fences. It looks trashy. You are having a house tour not showing the outside of a house on an episode of Hoarders. I understand we don't really live in a magazine but I'm hear to look for design ideas, not cheap lawn furniture.

The house numbers are cute. I love the sign.

Stone fireplace in the living room, lovely. Table inside the fireplace with another table in front of that table. Um, really really bad. I feel like Archie Bunker is hiding around the corner with those chairs. While I too was a recipient of hand me down furniture I made it work. I didn't force it with a table cloth on a table practically in front of the fireplace to make it "match".

The kitchen, another TABLE IN THE FIREPLACE. Unless this is a new design fad (I'm not jumping on that wagon) I don't get it.

The artwork is pretty cool as well as sparse. Maybe grouping it together (not in the fireplace) would have a bigger impact instead of sprinkling it around the home.

The backyard looks like a disaster. I mean come on the yellow cafeteria chair with graffiti. Am I missing something?

The rest of the house just looks like a white box with really bad beige carpet.

I love the map above the desk, the desk and the chair. It looks like a great place to work.

Why are we seeing the closets? Are wire hangers making a come back.

All in all the house is probably great. I don't think this is house tour quality. There is no cohesive design. Just random ojects. I don't need to see a close up of someones jewelry box.
And now you know why I was saying nothing. Because there isn't much to say that is nice.\

I know we all don't have big budgets but sometimes grouping like items together (artwork) will make a huge impact. You probably just have the 2 chairs and 2 tables in the living room. Try removing those tables from the fireplaces and facing the chairs toward the fireplace. If you want the TV in the fireplace it can be done with a less awkward result.

House Tour

I always had friends over for dinner or movies and when my fiance and I bought our house 3 years ago we had lots of get togethers. It wasn't until this past year when I planned a pirate party and almost everyone cancelled my text less than an hour before hand!!! I was crushed especially because I had done a lot of work finding a date that worked for everyone. Now I can't look at an eye patch or parrot without crindging. Now I'm all paranoid everyone will cancel last minute for my wedding.

So I guess a complex and the lack of reciprication is what has stopped us.

Good Luck!!! The same thing happened to me when I moved from ATL to Philly 6 years ago. I had a week to find an apartment because my friend bailed on me and I was in a new city!!!! It all worked out. Just go with your gut instinct and don't settle. Even after my year lease was up and I was more familiar with the city I stayed in that apartment for 4 years until my fiance and I bought a house nearby. Instincts!!

I agree with bepsf. I had a similar vanilla apartment, I used gold tones, browns, and blues. It was warm, inviting and elegant. I own a house now so I can paint freely but I still miss that apartment!

Help! How Can I Control the Moisture In My Bathroom?
Good Question

9/29/10 2:08 PM

Check the codes in your area but most places I've lived in require either a window in the bathroom or an exhaust fan. Otherwise this is a violation. I also have the world's tiniest bathroom with a srawny window that offers little relief to the moisture build up. I often leave the door open and have the ceiling fan in the hallway on. This helps a lot. Try placing a fan in the doorway of your bathroom to help dry it out after taking a shower. Also leave the door open the majority of the time when you are not at home.

Our house had the "old house" smell too. As soon as we started using a dehumidifier in the basement the smell was gone. I do like this idea though. I will try it in my vestibule that has no air circulation and gets that smell occasionally.
