I was just reading about how the smoke produced by many scented candles is laced with toxins linked to cancer, asthma and eczema. Bummer.

Beeswax and soy candles are ideal.

I am an ar-tist and work with linen canvas. That said, the material rips easily and straight. I have several runners that are simply torn canvas. Simple, simple, buy oh so chic!

I love that we all scramble at the last minute to clean up for... each other! And I think we are probably all forgiving of 'messes.' Thank you all for sharing, this has been great to read.

That said, I usually let my cat hair tumbleweeds strut their stuff, while I tackle odors, toilets and cat boxes. If there is extra time, surfaces and kitchen.

Once, I went out with a friend knowing my apt was a dump, but I thought, 'we're going out it's fine.' I was wrong. We went back to my place and I was annoyingly apologizing left and right saying, "I've been traveling, sorry for the mess." The mess didn't bother me, I really had been traveling a lot, but I was mortified by the oh so unpleasant, dirty sink smell heavy in the air. There is no 5 min prep when you are already out with your unexpected guest :(

The lesson: stay on top of odors because they will heighten your 'mess' tenfold.

I'm a total pitter patter around, scrambler. I am trying harder to be calm. That said, I really appreciate the intended value of spending that time with pets. Perhaps spending time with my cats will be better for calming me down than them.

@tinamina, I agree that a host shouldn't have to accommodate every little thing, but I wouldn't want to serve a not spicy to me dish to someone who found even the slightest bit of spice inedible. I suppose it's not essential, but it's certainly kind to ask if there are things that people absolutely wont eat.

And for food allergies, some people forget to mention allergies or only remember at the last moment, which means last min scramble for host. Better safe than sorry :)

Which Table Manners Do You Think are "The Essentials"?
11/7/11 4:13 PM

Host Essentials:
+ ask about food allergies and major dislikes

Guest Essentials:
+ offer to help clean up
+ @clickchick, agreed, "The nicest thing you can give the hosts is a heartfelt thank you (preferably written) after the occasion."

General Essentials:
+ no phones
+ say please & thank you
+ wait to eat until everyone is served
+ @Archdarling, agreed, "do not point out or think too long on another person's lack of "manners."

I'm not sure that a host(ess) gift really falls under table manners. I think it wise, as a host, not to expect anything. As a guest, it is good to offer to bring a side dish, dessert, wine etc... or to simply bring flowers or something small, if relevant.

I love creative challenges. They really inspire greatness.

I like the idea of leaning a well fitting, framed chalkboard in the space and using it for notes, menus, jokes etc... then simply adding interest with a bud vase. Simple. Easy. ...Also consider a really narrow terrarium, affixing a mixed media collage on cardboard, wall of stacked wine corks, paper sculpture, work the cubby into a grouping of artwork, or better, use the cubby as a host for something like a vertical succulent container and then sort of taper away from the cubby space with air plants pinned to the wall. You could apply that idea to anything: plates, dried flowers, butterflies, moss, coins, collection of odds and ends and just have it crawl/taper across the wall, away from the kitchen.

You've got lots of options so get started on something, anything, and learn from the experience. If you don't, that empty cubby will sit there waiting for genius to strike and I tell you it does not take genius to fill up that space, but once you've done something to it, I bet the most creative and relevant (to you) ideas will really start to flow. Good luck.

So thoughtful of you to say, Reeses902 :)

Baaaha, tonia329. I have three cats, but... they. own. me. Turns out whatever I thought to be mine, is actually theirs... including that table :)

I have a strong affection for the color on your walls, unfortunately, the BF really dislikes it. Happy to see someone gets to live with it! Also, I totally have a peek n prize too!

Thank you, jasminesummer! I painted the 4' x 5' portrait of my beau and I especially for that space, as well as all of the silhouettes. I heart Frieda Kahlo and the painting is my nod to her painting of herself and Diego Rivera which she also painted in San Fran. I'm a dork, I mean artist.

Thorndale, The wooden floors, which are not documented well in the photographs, are a very dark espresso brown. We selected lighter wood furniture, with the intention of the pieces standing out against the dark floor. I am happy with what we have, but I like your idea of richer wood too :)

HouseOnClintonAve, I painted the silhouettes of myself, my beau and 8 people {from any point in history} that we would like to invite to one fabulous dinner party. It's fun to have our dinner guests guess who the portraits are of!

Cashew, cats on the table is a battle I lost long ago - Thank goodness for tablecloths :)

Thank you for sharing, my friends!

Until relocated to their lamp roost, my birds were constantly being attacked my my black kitty (not pictured), gotard. They all have tiny little teeth punctures :)

Will be sure to outfit you in colorful galoshes and equip you with a bright umbrella should you ever come for dinner, joseph23 :)

I almost forgot...

It's terrible to be sick, but it's unusually cruel to be caught off guard with something awful in the summer time. When I am sick, I like the weather outside to mirror my misery, not challenge my ability to sleep with bright rays of sunshine and cheery laughter in the distance.

10 Tips for Surviving Sick Days at Home

When I was growing up our routine for tummy bugs was to pop in "The Witches," and then stick to the Brat diet: Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast sans condiments with a side of 7up.

These days, I like:
+ (not mentioned) A new toothbrush on hand for when I am back at 100%.
+ Juicer Remedy: 2 peeled lemons, thumb sized ginger, 2 garlic cloves, 1 apple, 1 pear, honey and hot water.
+ Homemade chicken noodle soup or vegetable soup because it is wonderfully nourishing. I also like mushroom broth for its heartiness.
+ Herbal Tea and water.
+ Lavender essential oil on the soles of the feet.
+ 3 cats to love me.
+ A laptop, netflix, my "The Witches" dvd.
+ Clean pajamas, robe and sheets.
+ Slippers (it makes me cringe right now to imagine putting my sensitive, feverish skin on cold hardwood floors).

As a side note, most modern electric heating pads automatically switch off at some point.

{remembering all of the giant piles of waste leftover from ordering in food reminds me of how much I hate cleaning up from my order-in weekend floor picnics, but I don't want to give them up}

While I totally get where you are coming from {i really do} and I get that you were just one block away... it still seems tacky. Maybe your example could be the exception, but in general it's weird to bring your own tupperware out and about anywhere other than in your packed lunch or a casual potluck.

Like I said, maybe you could be the exception or maybe you could accept the worldwide takeout system and also ask the restaurant not to bag the paper bag in plastic, or instead of calling the packaing garbage, recycle the waste. Paper bag = Recycling bin. Used food containers = Compost bin. If plastic bags aren't recyclable where you live, line a small bathroom garbage can with it or scoop someones litter box or something. Guilt solved.

I am not sure there is are enough people to kickoff a tupperware army ready to take on this anti-green issue. Just recycle, it's good for the soul.
