The Daily Scavenger: Tuesday's Finds National Roundup for April 17, 2012

Any suggestions for reasonably priced trough-like planters (longer and rectangular)? I'm looking for something longer than the Ikea ones from the under $20 posting.

We have them the opposite way, sheers closest to the windows, as these are almost always drawn, and thicker decorative (and light blocking) curtains further away from the window. These are over a patio door in our bedroom so during the day we usually have the thicker ones pinned back and they frame the sheers.

Where was the welding class? We live in Seattle and my boyfriend has been hoping to find one to attend.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, trying to find a long lasting, quality cfl bulb that is dimmable is near-impossible which reduces potential energy savings.

90% of my garbage is kitty litter - could someone do some research into the various methods of getting rid of this? I know there are issues with flushing it and there are also some in ground composters - a comparison of the different methods and their green-cred?

I also have used the shop local function for a while, I just wish you could shop for a particular TYPE of thing within those local shops - it only shows you the most recent 100 updated shops. If you're somewhere with a LOT of shops and you're looking for something specific, not too helpful. Also it only searches for the word you use and doesn't cross reference "Oregon" for "Portland" for example - so shops that don't use your specific word don't seem to be shown.

I grew up with a strawberry huller - but not this one - a metal one similar to this

don't know what the packaging was on it, we've had it for decades, but it is a BIG time saver when you're doing bulk freezing or jam.

I wanted to post this beautiful tea towel that a friend of mine brought back from the UK - it's Britain specific, but would work for anywhere with a similar climate - http://www.todryfor.com/towel.asp?id=138. So quaint!

Make Nocino (liquer made from green walnuts) and pass it out with a handmade label. If you make it now it will be "ripe" by right around the wedding.

I'm part of a lunch group at work - there's 5 of us and we each bring 5 portions of something we make over the weekends and trade on Monday. That way we all have lunch for the week, save on costs and don't get bored eating the same thing every day. For folks with similar diets it's a great way to keep things interesting and cheap!

One other note - in a power outage a corded phone will most likely work if your phone line is still working, while a cordless phone will often not because it requires the power AND the phone line to be working.

I grew up without plastic wrap in the late 70's early 80's - and have never bought it. We reuse recycled plastic containers and glass jars of varying sizes so we don't have to buy plastic containers, and like adventurejournalist, wash and reuse plastic bags.

You also want to be sure that there is no way the bottles can leak and mix, causing potentially lethal vapors. . . segregation of things like bleach and ammonia is just as important as locking things out of reach.

I have these and have NEVER used them after 2 years because I can't microwave in them. I guess if I kept dishes at the office it would work, but I'll stick with my glass pyrex dishes with the plastic lids for now. . .

When I worked as a recycling consultant to businesses about 4 years ago we told businesses you can recycle long strip shredded paper but you CAN'T recycle cross hatch paper shreds because the fibers are cut too small to be re-useable in the paper making process. We encouraged people to recycle the strips by putting them in paper bags.
