West Elm parsons desk is 48" and less than 24" deep. I find it plenty spacious!

A warm gray would probably look nice. The couch looks a little cramped on its current wall - is it possible for you to switch the couch and tv? The couch doesn't necessarily need to be centered with the tv to look good. If you put the tv on the current couch wall it will open up the walkway a lot more, and then you can put a desk or reading chair in that wall space next to the kitchen entry for extra seating/conversation space.

Last summer there was a span of what felt like weeks of rain in Chicago. One day my husband and I had enough - we dressed in our quick-dry shorts, keens hiking sandals, and rain jackets and went out for a long walk in the (warm) rain with the dog. We had a great time! Sometimes it really is best to just go play in the rain :)

@Jason Yang -- my husband and I let our dog sleep on the bed, but we have a rule that she is not allowed on any other furniture unless she is "invited." To teach her this, we would yell at her and make her get off the couch/chairs if she jumped up on her own. If she sat nicely while we were on the couch we'd ask her to come up. She sort of just figured out that she's not allowed up unless we say it's okay. (Though, I must admit, I've caught her sneaking up on the couch to lay in the sunshine in the morning...think we finally got her to stop that though) Good luck!

totally wacky idea, but it may be worth a try - nail some long nails on top of the window frame on an angle (like where the wall meets the frame) and then hang a curtain rod from there? I doubt the landlord would ever look on top of the frame to see the tiny holes.

I've been working on my first re-upholstery project. I read a lot of step-by-step tutorials online and got to work. I found that removing the old fabric and stapling on the new fabric was really easy (albeit incredibly tedious). Where I've stalled is sewing the new seat cushion. I have competent sewing skills, but for some reason I just can't get it right so it remains 3/4 finished. Which leads me to my advice on how to save money and still have it done right: do the stapling portion of the project yourself and hire a seamstress or reupholstery specialist to redo the seat cushion for you.

I can say from experience, do NOT choose Benjamin Moore's bayberry blue. It should really be called Smurf Blue. Cue my repainting a soft beigey-gray.

You can check out her blog for details on the curtains - if I remember correctly it was a stencil that took her weeks to finish :)

I own my condo (loft), and absolutely love it...but I do advise buyers and renters alike to check out your building's management company and cable/Internet providers if they're part of your assessments. I've had a nightmare of a time with our cable provider, but luckily a good management company helps mitigate that.

My parents always store their breads in the microwave. They keep each in it's bag and all of that in a basket for convenient removal when they want to actually use the microwave as a microwave. It's always works great. Even though it sounds weird, I'd do it too if I actually had an accessible microwave (counterspace is precious in my kitchen and the espresso machine got that real estate).

My mother gave me her gently used Singer from the 80s (okay, she tried to sew maybe three times ever, right after I was born, and then put it back in a closet until giving it to me fifteen years later). I've been using this machine for about ten years now and I love it! I advise you to look for a sturdy construction in good shape. So many cheap, new machines seem like they're more trouble than they are worth.

PS I also love that you matched the pattern up on the end of each chair so that each chair is truly identical. Makes it look professional, rather than DIY. Good work

I just bought that fabric and made a few pillows after I was too chicken to upholster my chair seats with it. Wish I saw what you did first - looks great!

@Joey C - I was thinking the same thing re: filling water bottles. Water fountains and bathroom faucets don't seem like clean places to get water - even if they are harmless as KimberlyRose seems to think. I've thought about buying a water Bobble to bring to the airport and then just going to a restaurant with fountain drinks and asking them to fill it with water. I've never been denied simple water from a food vender (good tip for water at sporting events too, rather than paying five bucks for a bottle). And those fountain beverage systems are usually triple filtered so the water is cleaner to start.
