This is such a great idea! I recently bought an original J & J Kohn bentwood off Craigslist for $15. It's missing the seat, and I've been trying to figure out how to economically replace it. I'm going to try this method! Make a Colorful Custom Chair Seat Homelife |

Based on the criteria, I can see why Chicago is on the list. The crime rate has sky rocketed, many condo values have plummeted (though the rental value is booming!), and the unemployment is a problem. But based on day-to-day quality of life, this city is FAR from miserable. The city streets are clean, downtown is lined with trees and parks, and flowers that are updated seasonally. It's gorgeous! And there are a ton of shopping/dining/recreational opportunities.... I guess my point is, "miserable" seems to be a sweeping adjective that describes only a subset of factors that make up a city. Can anyone tell me where the filing cabinet is from? Is it Container Store? I've been hunting for one to go with my parson's desk, and I don't want to shell out the money for the west elm matching cabinet. A Designer's Own Guest Room/Office Makeover Professional Project |

Like quite a few others, my sister and I also did this as kids. We used all sorts of things from sleeping bags, to couch cushions, to card board boxes. On more than one occasion, someone was injured and/or broke something...luckily never seriously, and certainly never enough to stop us from doing it again! I have to agree with most of the posters - West Elm furniture is beautiful for show, but not the best quality. I have the white laquer parsons desk, and the finish is damaged SO easily. I also bought a rug from West Elm that I love, but the quality is not as high as I think it should be for the price. I continue to buy decor accessories and bedding there (great quality bedding), but will not buy furniture or rugs again... if you still have doubts, look at their facebook page for feedback from customers. My husband and I sold our cars when we moved to Chicago almost five years ago. Haven't regretted it at all! We primarily get around by walking, and take the train or bus when we're traveling too far from home. If we ever must have a car, we just rent one. The public transit/rental car costs are still far less than the cost of parking/insurance on our cars would have been. And of course, all the walking is great exercise! As someone who has had numerous "too loud" upstairs neighbors, I'll just offer my ideas on how to make/keep peace with your neighbor. First, I admit, it is really awkward to have to tell a neighbor they're being disruptive and ask them to modify their ways. A note is not the best way for them to tell you, but they probably wanted to avoid direct confrontation. But now you know your noise is disturbing them, so go talk to them. Let them know you're aware of the floor/ceiling lack of insulation (I was shocked to learn that one of my neighbors didn't realize that fact in my loft building). Ask them where it's noisiest, try adding an area rug in those locations. If you wear shoes inside, try not to anymore. Give them your phone number so they can call/text you when things get too loud for prolonged periods. And lastly, drop a note to let them know when you're having guests over so they can be forgiving of the added noise. Hopefully you can find a happy medium! Such a timely post. Just today I was thinking about how, when I was in college, if I ever had a particularly stressful day or was feeling like I needed to clear my head, I would get in my car and drive down route 18 in NJ - and then take the scenic route back up along the shore, by all the gorgeous beachfront homes. Sometimes I'd park and have a good cry, other times the beautiful drive was enough to clear my mind. It's so sad that drive has been destroyed. I hope it rebuilds better than ever! The "Mix" table from Crate & Barrel is similar (and WestElm has some options too), but the bar for the legs is about 6 inches in from the edge on each side. I have it, good table for visual space, but a glass coffee table is a pain to keep looking clean - every speck of dust shows! Matthew's "Modern Coastal Casual" Room Room for Color Contest |

I'm thinking that this "no personal photos" thing spun off of the suggestion to put away personal photos when you are trying to sell your house - so it's easier for the potential buyer to picture his/her own family there.... That's the only logical explanation! I love having vacation and "life event" photos around my home. And like others said, I love seeing my friends' photos too! It just makes everything more welcoming and personal. Displaying Personal Photos: Awesome or Awkward? |

When I was working for Starbucks a few years back, they were all about creating that "third place" and promoting the "just say yes" philosophy. It was a joy to see friendships blossom between strangers who ordinarily sat alone and worked on their laptops. Even though I haven't worked there for over four years, I still keep in touch with some great customers. Home Away from Home: The Value of Third Spaces |

A warm gray would probably look nice. The couch looks a little cramped on its current wall - is it possible for you to switch the couch and tv? The couch doesn't necessarily need to be centered with the tv to look good. If you put the tv on the current couch wall it will open up the walkway a lot more, and then you can put a desk or reading chair in that wall space next to the kitchen entry for extra seating/conversation space.
