I have a full time job and I work from home 20 hours per week with a 2 year old. I agree with everything you say, and was glad to see that I intuitively do most of that. I hope you don't feel discourage by some of the less than kind comments folks posted. AND, blogging is a real job (if that is, in fact, your job). I manage my company's blog, and it takes a ton of time.

The key, in my opinion, to being successful is to have SOME outside of the home work time, even just a few hours per week. Because this then gives the liberty to take the smartphone and just go to the park when my son desperately needs it. Part of the terms of my employment were that I be available during all work hours and do the best I can on the days that I work from home. I admit, I have a fantastic boss, and many don't, but I do think society needs to allow for creative solution for work at home moms (and dads).

Thank you for this post.

Liked it better before...had more character. It looks kind of "neutered" now. Though I've always been more of a fan of color.

I love this, Elizabeth! If it makes you feel any better, my son is 3 months, and I'm just now designing his nursery. We are finally moving from a 1 bed to a 2 bed (in Boston--you understand!). I am doing celery green and a grey-blue. Your creativity is inspiring!

I personally love that style home with rich, warm colors--reds, oranges, golds! I think they complement the bungalow feeling. Go for it!

I got my vintage (1950's) 60-drawer card catalog for FREE from the university library where I work. They couldn't get anyone to take it because it was so heavy (solid wood). I had always wanted one, and they go for thousands!

I love this, too, and I don't even have kids! I wonder how you could make this safe for kids to actually hang out on the "opposite ground"?

Thank you for this, Michael! When I pulled up the site today, I thought you had taken a picture of MY kitchen (your before shot). We have those same laminate 80's cabinets. Who knew you could paint them?! I'm going to check with my landlord...paint can't do anything but improve!

I really like the idea of this place, especially as someone who is also a young art collector (totally understand the problem of only being able to afford small pieces at the moment)...my only thoughts are that the space could use some color; and some slightly more upscale light fixtures. Seems like this would make the place feel brighter.

Really inspiring. You have made beautiful feel 'homey' in a great way. I often worry about having too many colors and patterns in one space, but your house is successful in this!

I have window this close together in my little Kenmore Square apartment, and drapes actually work nicely--especially if you get a simple color/pattern. The small space between the windows didn't seem weird on mine. As far as the balcony door, I'd just take the hardware down and don't put coverings on it--you don't want to cover the stained glass!
