the dining size table with a few books and a pair of lamps is a great minimal statement. I'd have probably put ten times the books on it, but I love it being so ridiculously spare for it's size.

I only recommend tung oil for the hardwood floors I specify--it's such a natural and living finish--beats that plasticy furniture like finish that you normally get from varnish and poly. I specify Carlisle Wide Plank Floor's version, www.wideplankflooring.com

kuroneko, I totally disagree! I'll take a crusty metal table or distressed piece of wood any day over something shiny and new...texture is such an important layer of design.

I have to agree with decorator dave, having had my own place featured in a house tour too, it's weird seeing people say negative things about your home that you've worked hard to craft...obviously dave, me and arthur all love our places like they are...house tours should be more about sharing/getting ideas and less about other people's presumptuous and catty judgements.

seriously, what did you morons think it was going to look like, a Room and Board catalog?? the house was built in like 1802..it's SUPPOSED to look old...it was the same way when the Clintons or Carters or any other liberal administration was in there as it when a conservative president moves in.

I think that the third room is beatifully elegant (portrait of Jackie and all).

it's history...supposed to invoke some pride.
