I highly recommend the wines from Domaine de la Terre Rouge/Easton Wines in Amador County, CA (http://www.terrerougewines.com). In addition to their Rhône style wines, they have some fabulous Zinfandels. Never thought I liked Zin until I tried these! This is an up-and-coming wine region that has been getting more and more press but has yet to make it onto the radar of the mainstream public. Check it out! I agree that wines shipped in from halfway around the globe are not environmentally friendly, and I'm surprised there weren't more US wines listed here! Having worked on organic vineyards and having seen the practices of non-organic ones, I would have to say that I nearly always choose organic over conventional, regardless of the wine's origin. By buying organic, you are supporting sustainable agriculture, and your local wine merchant will take notice! Why not ask him/her to stock more local organic options?
