Minka Aire Concept line has very clean lines, is very quiet, and has a powerful motor, particularly if you get the "wet" model for outdoor use. It is not under $200, but is something like 250 with delivery from Hansen Wholesale (just google it). A fan is all about the motor, and strong motors are pretty expensive to make, so truly good ceiling fans do seem to start at the $200 mark.

aside from take out once a week- this IS how we live. And have since long before the recession. Paid off grad school loans, bought a big place...But in nyc it is easy to live on very little-- so many free things (except babysitting....)

I am amazed by how many nyc parents claim to celebrate children's imaginations and encourage their explorations and yet have rigid philosophies-- I'm all for wooden toys etc but if my kid wants a tacky plastic barbie why would I so no again? My adult anti-Barbie theory is totally different from my daughter's love of the object. I think it is interesting to watch myself as a parent be challenged when my 2 year old falls in love with objects that I think are simply consumer blah-blah. And never mind this parent's audacity to say she loves playing with her children and their toys while simultaneously acknowledging she spends 5 hours total Monday-Friday with them. There is a disconnect here...

We have a stainless fridge and stove (inherited when we bought our apartment) and a white dishwasher. It works fine because the cabinets are white, and actually helps break up the potential monotony of all white.

We have the Austin Air Health Mate and it is a very good air purifier. While the filters are a bit expensive (as is the machine) they do last five years, so on a per-day basis it is not too expensive.

But definitely 1) talk to the neighbor and 2) if that is unsuccessful, talk to your landlord or Board of Directors. There are standard provisions in most rental and proprietary leases that prohibit any tenant from making noises or odors that interfere with others' enjoyment of their premises. In a rental, your landlord might have to pay for whatever abatement steps you have to take.

Good Questions: Where Can I Find a Storage Ottoman?

The flat $100 shipping is not really $100. There is now a $10 surcharge for NYC, and there is a $25 fee if your order has more than 25 pieces. This last bit is what is really frustrating--I bought two kitchen cabinets and two 8 foot countertops (the latter being why I chose to go the delivery route as my car is very small) and because each piece of the cabinets is a line item on the invoice (hinges, legs, etc.) I ended up with 26 items and a "non-negotiable" $25 surcharge. Add that to the fact that I had to pay $50 for next day delivery when I was told on the phone that any order completed by 7PM would be shipped the next day and the $100 became $185.

Now I am just praying I got every piece I need.

if you live in a city and take buses or subways - neither the stokke or bug will work for you. Any Mac. is best- folds so easily quickly and is narrow-- no sidewalk hogging. The Stokke and Bug seem to work best for people who just walk (no public transport) and don't go into shops too much. Most nannies I've talked to don't like them or just use them for short walks. The parents I've talked to all have to have a 2nd stroller. For me, anything that claims to be a good design shouldn't require you to make an additional purchase.

Bob,

Sorry to take so long to respond (I am sure you have given up hope by now). The shelving was paid for at the same time as a custom stereo/cd cabinet that is between the big room and the kitchen and was $3000 total. It was made by our neighbor. The ladder was around $100, I think, from Olde Good Things. It was 14' high and had to be cut down (to 9'9") to get into the building! The ceilings are about 13'6" to the bottoms of the rafters at where the bookshelves are.

i love this little mill- don't take it out, never thought of that- just seems easier to throw a container of premade food in our bag. I just freeze the food in baby food jars (bought about 20 and just keep reusing them). Found the ice cube method only worked when she was eating individual foods instead of mixtures.

just bought one at Glorious Home - great and affordable except...you can't change the angle of the umbrella. Huge design problem- in the late afternoon we have to haul the table across the roof from the umbrella (roof deck) to get under the shade.

We have a malber combo washer dryer and I would not recommend it if you have the space for more (which appears to be the case). The main reason is that the unit is small, only 11 pound capacity, and takes a long time to dry clothes. It does a great job, and is ideal for us as we have a new baby and are in a top-floor walk up, but if you can get separate units, do so.

Clairepetrol, just as an FYI, the dryer part did break down and the washer still worked fine.

I've heard that chalk dust get everywhere if you don't have a tray at the bottom- a design problem with chalkboard paint. Anyone else have this problem?
I really want a little chalkboard but can't find a clean looking one.

Not sure why these are considered a good design- ice cube trays do the same thing with less plastic and can be reused for other functions...i.e. making ice. Simplicity!

Monika,

The artwork is color copies from a children's book we found on the street.
