Your primary residence is an Airstream in Tornado Alley? It's a great conversion but please tell me you have a shelter nearby (or you roam elsewhere during the season)! Shari's Airstream Studio Small Cool Contest |

Great space! I'd love to have that double sink in the kitchen - and the floor is very fun. Is/are the furry resident/s camera-shy? We get a shot of the litter box but not the user? No fair! ;-) Sharon's Sunshine From Both Sides Small Cool Contest |

Nice space. I second Drew's comments above (esp. the late night bed/bath aspects ;-) ). Interesting choice on the desk . . . lol, it looks larger than your kitchen - but they do have amazing drawer space. Leah's Cozy Halifax Home Small Cool Contest |

Another vote for the desk option. There are convenient outlets on the window wall and it could be treated as a built in secretary unit. Use the right-size artwork to cover the fuse box but still allow access (I made a fabric-covered cork-board in a similar space). Some shin-saving advice, buy/make a baby bumper for the shelf edge if it can't be removed (could be structural). How To Treat Awkward Living Room with Even More Awkward Built-in? Good Questions |

"solid public transportation"??? Are you really from Austin? The town is slowly making a few improvements (oh,so slowly) but is still far from easy to get around without a car. Much noise is made about the new-ish commuter rail but it has a minimal schedule, few stops and fewer connecting links. If planning a car-less trip to Austin, be sure to use the CapMetro site for a realistic look at how many of those "cool" places you can get to. Nice space. But where on earth did you find a 300 sf studio that allowed build-out here (fellow Austinite)? A friend and I were just talking about that last night. Most of the new downtown buildings offer smaller spaces but they're still 500+ sf, pretty poor design and definitely over-priced for the quality (bargain for NY, silly for ATX). Nice. I've been using coconut oil for facial moisturizer and for my Lodge skillet for several months (yes, different jars ;-) ) and have loved the results. Had not even thought about using it on cutting boards. If it works on cutting boards it should work on butcher block counter (Ikea) as well? Has anyone tried it? One more vote for getting ride of the doors from both a cleaning and safety issue. A friend of my parents was severely scalded in a shower when the cold water went off and he couldn't get out of the shower quickly enough. True, it would be a rare occurrence with today's default water heater settings - but overriding those settings is one of the most common changes. @dewluca - if you go with the small plants It might be helpful to think of it as building a small grouping over the month . . . something that would look great on a tall shelf away from certain furry beasties (which I'm dealing with as well). Perfect timing, my solution just occurred this morning . . . take one indoor kitty plus one French door (w/screen door) plus one outside stray kitty, mix well 30 min. before your alarm goes off. I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Poirot . . . in both the books and the Suchet series the fastidious Belgian would always place the napkin into his collar during a meal (or trimming his moustaches). Actually, being somewhat generously endowed, I've often wished I had the nerve to do this myself (which is worse - napkin or stain? ;-) ) Buttonhole Napkins: Have You Ever Heard Of Such A Thing? Best way to be 99% sure . . . make a quick 3D model of the elevator and known furniture (and any other critical space). Glue/tape graph paper to cardstock or light cardboard (makes measuring/cutting easier). Grid can also be drawn on material manually. Assume 1 square = 1" or scale appropriate to project. Measure the interior space/doorframe of the elevator and cut cardstock to size (don't forget to cut out door opening). "Build" elevator and tape edges so that it can stand upright or fold flat. Repeat for known sofa/furniture measurements (create box based on max measurements). Set elevator on flat surface and manuever sofa model in elevator space. Does it fit in door, break plane of "roof", etc. Using this model you can adjust sofa measurements to find max dimensions (don't forget to allow for protective materials/wrappings. This can be used for tight hallways, corners and trucks as well. It takes about 15 min to make the models and you may feel a bit silly but it's well worth the effort. Good luck! Loving the spare room turned dressing area - nice use of space. Also loving the kitchen set up - great way to take advantage of the window. It must be wonderful to come home to such a calm space at the end of a hard day. Enjoy it! Susanne's Little Bit Old Fashioned Small Cool Contest |

Loving the good-size mirror over the range/oven. Yes, it "gives the illusion of space" but, more importantly, it's a great way for the cook to stay connected to what's going on in the kitchen. You can keep an eye on the kids/pets, continue conversations with guests, keep an eye on the traffic behind you when pulling out a hot dish, etc. Wish this was used more often - too many rangetops and sinks are set against the wall and treated as dead end space.
