I'm not kidding: Just looking at the photo made my heart pound and palms sweat. The only other thing that does that is thinking about having to get on an airplane.

I love this kitchen. I think the Marmoleum looks great in this space. I am at the beginning stages of a kitchen upgrade and have already decided on Marmoleum for the floor; this kitchen confirms that I made the right choice. I had planned on all white cabinets but I'm going to think long and hard about grey or blue on the bottom cabinets.

I third the idea about donating old or unneeded towels to an animal shelter or rescue place. They have all kinds of things they can do with them.

Mint has completely taken over our square foot garden and has gone beneath the frame and is spreading in the rest of the vegetable garden. Is there a way to kill it?

I have the same bathtub. It's original to my house, which was built in 1948.

My childhood pillow (which now must be 50 years old), my dog, and blankets. I take the pillow with me when I travel. If I forget to bring it, I am very unhappy.

Don't use an expedit as a room divider if you live in earthquake country unless you are somehow able to secure it through the foor and ceiling. A falling bookcase could kill you.

If the landlord says something you find inappropriate, you may want to think twice. I rented a beautiful apartment in Mill Valley, California, for me and my 14-year-old daughter. When I went to see the place, the landlord asked me all kinds of questions that weren't really pertinent to whether I would be a good tenant. He also told me quite a bit about himself. I thought he was just being friendly, although I remember telling my daughter afterwards that I thought it was strange that he would say his major goal in life was to "sit in a meadow with a naked woman and a bottle of good wine." He said it in the context of a conversation about traveling in Ireland, and it somehow seemed to fit the topic so I wasn't unduly alarmed. Either that, or I wanted the apartment so badly that I ignored the warning signs.

It turned out that he only rented to women in the six-unit building (he had one of the apartments) and that he continually sexually harassed all of us. He knew our work schedules and would wait in the driveway for us to come home so he could block our way and make inappropriate remarks about what we were wearing or insist that we have dinner with him (we didn't). One time, he said to my daughter, "You remind me of a movie that I saw in England in which a man poured a bottle of wine over the head of a naked woman." My daughter didn't mention this to me at the time because she knew I would get upset and she didn't want to move.

Trust your instincts. If the landlord/landlady seems intrusive or weird, you may want to look elsewhere.

I love my ipad for web surfing and watching videos. I hate it for sending emails because the keyboard is too small and is awkward to use.

If you only have one, I would get a computer. I cannot see preparing a school assignment, for example, on an ipad. I am a professional editor and I use my computer for working on documents.

My door opens into my living room but it is off to one side (not centered). We put a sofa table along the wall it is closest to but far enough back so the door won't hit it if it is open. We put a lamp and a sculpture on top and a basket for mail on the bottom shelf and hung a painting on the wall above it. This setup helps define the space, looks nice, and works with the rest of the living room.

I must say that we live in California and don't have to deal with muddy shoes or boots very often. When we do, we go in the back door, removing our footwear on the patio before we come in. I would think a bench to sit on while removing shoes would work. You could put the shoes under the bench and have a mail basket on one side of the bench.

I wish this piece gave the writer's name so I could address her (or him) when I say that it brought tears to my eyes.

I've lived in some wonderful houses and apartments and miss all of them. But the place I miss the most is the house my parents lived in after my dad retired. It was in the Sierra between Oakhurst and Fish Camp and about 10 miles from the Yosemite National Park gate. It was set among huge old oaks and pines and was about a 10-minute walk from a small lake. I have never felt more relaxed than I felt there, and it was a wonderful place for my daughter and her cousins to have fun together. My dad was a master carpenter and his wonderful work was everywhere in the house.

My mom sold the house after my dad died in 1992 because it was too lonely there for her. She regrets that decision and so do I. A few years ago, I learned that it is now owned by two artists from the Monterey area who plan to retire there. I have been in contact with them and they've invited me to stay there. But I don't think I can. I think I would cry nonstop, both about the house and my dad. It does comfort me that two great guys love the house as much as I do.

So, author of this piece, I understand what you're feeling.

I can't imagine not having a rocking chair when you have a small baby. I loved rocking my baby daughter to sleep. It felt so warm and cozy and intimate.

I had an old-fashioned wooden rocking chair that didn't take up a lot of space. I bought cushions for the seat and back and was perfectly comforable.
