Have Bitter Apple spray on hand to spray the "no-go" areas. It's a training tool, works for cats and dogs. They hate the smell! Just spray the crib a few times before baby arrives to teach your furry babies that there is - - nothing to see here, keep moving, kitties!

I love the gray! Since I am a rookie, baby #1 is on the way, my best guest for what to pack: wipes, diaps, hooter hider, my cell/wallet.

I tried the sleepytime rocker at a local store here in Chicago - (Grow on Division/Damen). I found it to be very comfortable. The arm rests were at a good height, the back came up just high enough to rest your head and it comes with a lower lumbar, accent pillow.

The only negative I will note, is the rocking motion was not smooth. It sort felt like a bump in the road. I found it annoying enough not to buy it. But my friend decided to purchase it, it didn't bother her as much.

Hope that's helpful!

These are so great! What a clever idea, it really takes a great eye to come up with the different characters and colorways. Great design execution.

Thanks to Cheryl/Lidmen for sharing your tutorial! I think I will start saving my lids and caps now.

Another idea, funny but true, you could get the same effect with a dog bed!
Try a bolster-style or donut style. The good ones have fabrics that wick wetness, resist stain and odors and are chew-proof - double bonus!

I wanted to be a cat. Or raggedy Ann. No wait, those little mice all dressed up in Beatrix Potter books. I think I changed my mind a lot.

II - as nazrd commented, varying the textures is key in a monochromatic color palette (whether it be all red or all white). So yes, I agree you have to really dig deep to find creative ways to keep things interesting and inspired.

For me, it also takes a lot of discipline to stick to a plan and not fall head over heels for every new cool product or catalog spread.

Pixie - we have the cat box in a storage closet. We lined the carpeted floor with a plastic runner from home depot and cut it to size. For the actual cat box, we used a large shallow rubbermaid bin. So far it has worked, but we need to find a new spot for it. I would love to put in the negative space under the staircase but it would require cutting through drywall. Scary!

Thank you for all the very nice comments! You all are so generous.

KathinCO - I hear you. I am a color person, too. I like all kinds - vibrant, neutral, offbeat. I get my color fix from paintings. I found that when I would paint a room orange, I would be sick of it next week. So now all my color goes onto the canvas, then hung on the wall, then moved when I am over it.

j i - the rooftop furniture is from Kingsley Bate. We got it from a club-type store, but you can see it online at allmodernfurniture.com. The style is called Amalfi. It's really nice deep seating.

southernwayfarer - the dining table is from Pine and Design (north ave, chicago), which is now out of business. Several years ago, we searched for months for a rustic, "Thanksgiving" style table before finding this one. Now, there seems to be more options out there. If we didn't already have this one, I probably would go for the Big Sur from Crate and Barrel.

SFGall - LOL! Well, we'll learn quickly. We are expecting our first child. So far, it looks like we have planned a good mix, knowing all along we would be starting a family. We have quite a busy household already ~ 1 dog, 1 cat and many guests under the age of 2. The cowhide rug in the LR, is totally amazing. Grape juice just wicks right off (it is hair afterall). The barcelona and buttercup are also favorites among our kiddo friends. Slipcovers just toss right in the wash and most other surfaces are wipeable. Wish us luck! I am sure we will be fine tuning along the way.

itsthehouseshow - I wish it looked like that everyday! Glad you noticed.

I used to work for a manufacturer who produced all their goods in China. Having seen how much things really cost in production (cheap) and the working conditions the chinese labor force has to endure......my viewpoint has completely changed. I used to just buy, buy buy,"it's only $5", but now I buy less and look for things that are hand crafted or made locally and spend the $25 more. If that is not an option, I have committed myself to buy things on sale as to not contribute to the huge margins being made by the retailers and manufacturers. The only way to change minds in that industry is to make it less profitable for them.

First off, it looks great! I love the way the tiles are layed out.

I agree with the robins egg blue. Especially, if it's a guest washroom, where style and mood are key.

If it's a bathroom you will be using everyday to get ready, I would choose a color that compliments your skin tone. There's nothing worse, than a sickly cast on your skin to wake you up in the morning! I like warm neutral colors like BM Ballet White, then add style and depth with artwork and gorgeous towels.

I live in a townhome development that has a written law that you can't hang your clothes out to dry. I personally break that rule all the time and no one has ever complained. That being said, I try to be very respectful of my neighbors and realize that not everyone feels the same as I do (ie, what's the big deal?). I only hang clothes, blankets or pillows out of sight and I take them down right away when they are dry.

I see both sides of the issue. I really don't want to see my neighobor's underwear that should have been thrown away a long time ago. At the same time, I do love little italian homes that proudly display their laundry like colorful flags outside on their balconies. There is a certain poetry to it.
