Ugh x2 here re: cry it out talk. Let's avoid this hot topic, huh? It's controversial at best, dangerous at worst.

First picture = hugely unsafe babywearing no-no! Really. I know he looks hip, but those carriers are very similar to the recalled pouch-style and should not be featured in any responsible babywearing article.

If you can't see the baby's face, it's not safe.

But thank you for featuring babywearing at all! Real men definitely wear their babies.

Ha! Ditto to the above. Whenever I would utter the words "I'm bored", they were always answered with "well I can find you something to do!" and it was never good.

I use the same technique myself. Works like a charm.

This looks great, but where did the spaghetti go? Or the canned goods and sauce?

My other question is this - we have a similar system in half of our pantry, but the big flaw is when you buy a new package of something - inevitably, you have some left over that won't fit in your container, and now you are storing two versions of the same item (one in your container, and the leftover in the original packaging). I guess what I mean is that this is a good idea, but beware, there are little pitfalls, too.

Beautiful, but I would love to see a rug or two. It would soften the place up a bit, literally and figuratively.

Sunny is right - I sew a lot, and cutting terrycloth is the most god-awful mess ever. It gets on everything, and doesn't stop - the cut terry sheds bits for weeks after cutting!

You'd need to do this in a small area, to keep the mess contained, then wash it a few times to clear all the shedding terry before use.

But it looks great!

Mellow Yellow - you're kidding, right? Cloth is by FAR greener, and that environmental argument was debunked many, many years ago. Directly from seventh generation's website:

All disposable diapers, including Seventh Generation’s, rely on man-made materials to deliver the high-level performance that parents expect of modern diapers. These materials are mostly petroleum-derived and are not renewable, which adversely impacts the environmental footprint associated with these products. At Seventh Generation, we are pleased to offer an alternative that is not bleached with chlorine, and are working hard to further improve the sustainability of our diaper products.

Yup - petroleum - nearly A CUP of it - in EVERY SINGLE disposable diaper. And that doesn't take into account the manufacturing, transportation, and disposal of a very bulky one-use product.

Cloth requires about 30 gallons of water a week - the amount in a single 7-minute shower. And perhaps a cup of bleach a month. And each one can be used many, many times over the course of a child's diaper years.

50 cloth diapers versus 1700 or more sposies.

Seriously - even making that argument reflects a level of ignorance and lack of research on the topic that is staggering.

The books (including the sequel and the biography of the author) are spectacular! I recommend those, too!

(they may even be better than the movie.)

You could also make Limoncello, a delicious liqueur. It will use a lot of juice and rind, but it will last you for a very long time.

Agreed with Susan.

If you cook regularly, the items stored on open shelves will develop this tacky, greasy film that is very hard to clean off. Closer to the stove means faster buildup.

I agree that open shelves are nice, and work well for items that are used very regularly, but you should definitely factor in the increased cleaning time that they will create for you.

A good wool persian/oriental rug will last longer than any other you could buy - they wear beautifully.

Ohdeedoh readers, do you have a great find for baby at Whole Foods that you can share with everyone?

Woah - I thought AT was going to mark sponsored ads? Because this is clearly an ad for Whole Foods. This entire post strikes me as pretty slimy, and especially the above tagline.

If you want to "green" your baby products, you will at least consider cloth diapers and/or reusable wipes. Really, the "natural" diapers still go to landfills and take many hundred years to decompose - not a significantly greener option, overall, than the big brands. No matter the WF marketing with the "green" buzzword thrown about.

I like the color idea, too.

Have you considered buying a graphic quilt? If you go on Etsy, there are lots of custom quiltmakers. You could pick solids that are all in one color family, it might look really chic.

Nudik makes strange comparisons - I mean, stillbirth has nothing to do with SIDS - it is a separate cause of infant death. It is totally irrelevant what the rate of death for each is in comparison to the other.

And the writing comment - huh? Sure, if you keep your kid on their back until they're three and never let them practice fine motor skills...but I hardly think the link between back sleeping (in isolation) and writing skills is that highly correlated.

Were pates and terrines ever out? They have been on menus in San Francisco restaurants steadily for at least the last 15 years....

Wait! I heard it was made by prostitutes for clients *after* they had done the deed, in order to cover up the, erm, attendant odors that might give the clients away.

All the anchovy and olive and caper would overpower any evidence of the client's indiscretion....

If you have any doubts or worries, you can always screw a steel bar (with pre-drilled holes, available in any hardware store) to the bottoms of the legs to extend them back another 6-8 inches or so.

That would prevent any tipping, as the child could not get enough leverage to overcome the increased length of the legs behind....
