Well, as half of another bookworm couple, I certainly like your books and shelves. I even recognized some volumes we've got - it's like finding mutual acquaintances.

Juliet, just give 'em some more time. I bet in another 30 years they'll have LOTS more books. ;-) But AT, I would second a request for more creative shelving ideas!

Slightly off-topic, but yes, there are the occasional bats in Richmond. We helped some friends chase them out of their new house.

I actually really like it over the fireplace.

And in any case, if you want to keep it, then keep it.

I'm with babygrace - cardamom's very good in rice pudding. If you're feeling decadent, make it with sweetened condensed milk. :-)

Now that I think of it, I use it as a "layering" spice, usually with cinnamon. It's nice on French toast and cookies.

Didn't anyone see that episode of Eureka where they all ate the lab-grown chicken and went crazy? The scientist making it had added something, it had unintended consequences, and Jack had to save the day.

Um, yeah. I won't say "never" because stuff happens, but lab meat strikes me as a terrible idea. Just raise the animals already. We eat conventional meat now, but my granddad used to raise beef cattle on the prairies of eastern New Mexico. For. real. Cowboys are my heroes.

I'd rather see all this brainpower work on less unnatural ways to feed people cheaply. Hunger is a real issue, especially in other parts of the world. We're so blessed in the States to have access and money for really good meat, if we choose to go that route.

laurelsg - I use all the good-looking green tops. I think the green part is better than the white for when you're not cooking it, like as a garnish on chili. It seems milder (though that could just be me). But I certainly cook the green part along with the white in recipes, too.

I also use the green tops on leeks... but those are really tough and have to cook forever, like in a crockpot with meat. But that's nice if you don't actually want the onion to disappear into your dish.

Faith's list is great, and I second most of the above comments. beatrix is right - it totally depends on your cooking style. I've never used a scale and mostly only measure for baking.

My bare-bones list:

-big pot with lid, little pot with lid, frying pan/iron skillet, mixing bowl, cookie sheet, cutting board, pie pan, crock pot
-wooden spoons, knives, turning spatula, big spoon/ladle, kitchen shears, can opener, pyrex/tupperware/glass storage containers
-salad plates, bowls, mugs, flatware
-coffee pot :-)

Really-really-nice-to-have list:
-microwave, Kitchen-Aid with grater attachment, stick blender (or real blender!), coffee grinder
-dinner plates, tiny bowls, serving bowls, drinking glasses
-scraping spatula, whisk, tongs, measuring cups, liquid measuring cup, measuring spoons, peeler
-wok, muffin tin, colander

AND if you pad the dishes with cloth napkins, you'll have real napkins when you get there. :-) The dollar store is another good source for cheap utensils like wooden spoons.

What fun! I have the Once Upon a Tart cookbook, too! (It's a little more complicated than I'm usually willing to cook, but great for inspiration :-). )

And green chili makes me happy, too. How do you fix it? I have frozen roasted whole chilies that I thaw one at a time and usually dice and saute for soup or sauces, but I'd be happy for more ideas!

I love this thread. I've been missing NM lately, and biscochitos sound really good. And, a friend gave me a big bag of roasted green chiles last weekend...

I'm with elainab99 and MisaL - growing up in NM, I knew them as Christmas and special occasion cookies, and they're definitely wonderful.

I use vegetable shortening too, and they turn out just fine. Personally, I like cinnamon in them AND cinnamon sugar on top. :-)

How funny - I usually check thekitchn for foodie ideas, but today I just Googled "steaming artichokes in slow cooker" and this came up.

@pingarina - I want to cook mine in the slow cooker today to keep from heating up my kitchen and to keep the microwave free.

I'm excited about these seasoning ideas - usually we just steam them straight and serve with butter. Maybe I'll be able to convince my guest that artichokes are good after all.

I often put a whole chicken or Cornish game hen in the crock pot with just a little salt and maybe a bay leaf, and it's really good and easy and mild on a stomach. I'll serve it with a vegetable risotto. My mom's go-to salad is fresh spinach, crumbled bacon, Swiss cubes, and pecans, with a quick orange juice-vegetable oil dressing.

Hope that helps!
