I visited a historical museum last summer and they were selling a copy of a map of Indianapolis from 1825. It showed the names of the farmers who owned the plots of land, which are now developed urban and suburban areas. Unfortunately I didn't get it at the time due to finances, but when I visit again this summer I hope to, especially since it is likely that we will be moving cities for my husband's job.

I think what is really interesting to read from these comments, and from other discussions I have read on this subject is the hostility toward pink and "girly" things, and how proud some mothers are that there daughters play with "boy toys" over "girl toys." Yet what is absent, or at least underrepresented from the conversation is the hostility toward blue and "boyish" things. This, to me, is the epitome of patriarchy. The implication is that things that are traditionally feminine, or "girly," are somehow inferior to things that are traditionally masculine. I'm curious how mothers who feel they're being gender neutral actually push toys that are "for" the opposite gender.

But with that being said, there are difference between males and females. Some of those are the result of nurture, some of nature. I have worked with young children from a very long time, and you can see some of these differences from a very young age, like before 24 months of age. Boys tend to gravitate toward mechanical and competitive endeavors, and girls toward social and nurturing endeavors, and yes, there are exceptions to this rule. I think, however, that parents should keep an open mind, either way, and allow their children to play with whatever they fancy.

Long hot showers. I just can't start my day without them. It's where I come up with all my brilliant thoughts.

For the first four months of my daughter's life we lived in a 430 square foot studio, so the Diaper Genie was very nice. After we moved into a bigger place we didn't need it anymore.

The usefulness of so many of these items really depends on your lifestyle.

That would make a cute pillow, but as a TV cover, it's very gaudy. It draws far more attention to itself than the TV ever would.

I guess I just don't understand this concept of covering up your TV, especially when they're the more sleek flat screens.

I love this! The colors are wonderful and just overall the room is sweet and creative. I love how so much of it is decorated with hand me downs and thrifted items. Anyone can buy brand new stylish items and put together a decent looking room, but thrifted and hand me down items force you to be clever and creative.

Yeah... didn't read the article. Don't care what this woman has to say about parenting. Who is she, exactly?

One thing that those super spiritual, in touch with nature non-Western people didn't do in Babies was spend any time at all analyzing, debating, and defending their and other people's parenting choices, and being chronically offended by everything. Don't get me wrong, I'm a sucker for a good debate, but these mommy wars have been talked about ad nauseum. The moral of the story is to do what it is you do and to hell with what someone in the Wall Street Journal or a comment section on the Internet has to say about homemade baby food. clothe diapers, etc...

I'm over birds and tree branches. That seems like the theme to about 70% of the nurseries featured on here.

Parts of Detroit are going through gentrification. The lower income, crime prone former tenants are now moving out into the suburbs, and former suburbanites with more disposable income are moving back into the city.

Wipe warmers keep the wipes moist? Really? How does heat help to keep wipes moist? If anything, it would help speed up the evaporation process. I've never had an ounce of trouble keeping wipes moist in a regular old plastic container, unless of course I forget to close the lid.

When my cat had surgery we had to buy litter called "Yesterday's News." It is made from recycled newspapers. It is surprisingly absorbent, better than some clay litters out there. And it is fairly inexpensive, too.

We just moved into our new place about three weeks ago. Our old neighbors were great. Downstairs we had an older woman and older man who would always stop and chat with us, and make over our baby daughter. The couple next to us were quiet and kept to themselves, and the man across the hall was a firefighter who was rarely ever there. The new place.... everyone is great except the neighbors upstairs. They're a young couple who bicker constantly. I've heard them yelling at each other in the hallways at 3am. Not to mention they have a three year old son who runs around, even though I do not think he is 100% responsible for the stomping going on. Oh, and their cigarette butts fall onto our patio.

apilheartsaaron, I have had the same problem with Rit dye. I tried putting some in a spray bottle to dye a blanket, but it clogs the nozzle and ruins it. This happened with four different bottles.

This is a great idea in theory, but seeing that I am not the only one who has come across this problem, perhaps we could look into ways to modify the technique?

My rental kitchen has the exact same cabinets. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to paint them. The kitchen is such an eye sore that I just pretend doesn't exist until I need it. This would be gorgeous inspiration if we could do something about it, though.

But as for the cookie jar, Mammy caricatures were indeed created with racist intents so essentially, displaying it either says you're a racist, or just naive. Perhaps Michael is a racist, but I doubt it, and bet he meant no harm by it.

But terryh, this is a design blog, not a political/social commentary one. Please do not assume other people's political and social stances in this community.

Inigo's all fun and unique until classmates see The Princess Bride. Anyway, I think giving your kid a unique name just so it contributes to your ultra cool, non-conformist indie cred is silly. Find a name that you just like and stop trying to one up everyone else.
