That's a really nice place, and a beautiful floor plan too!

For those looking for inexpensive, clean and safe accomodations in the heart of Tokyo, I suggest the Lutheran Brother's Hostel near Ichigaya eki. It has no curfew, each room comes with two double beds, and it was (in 2002-2004) just 4000yen per night! Ichigaya is three or so stops east of Shunjiku.

Tokyu Hands is wonderful, and for the foreigner longing for just a taste of home, you can't beat Kinokuniya. I lived in Shizuoka for two years (about 100 miles south of Tokyo), and I went to Tokyo about once a month or so. Those shops were always on my list!

Nice, cozy, sweet first home together. Congratulations to you both. Comfortable and warm, but not the most stylish, and that's just fine.

This is MCM gone to an extreme - only thing missing is a black leather Eames lounge chair jutting out from some corner and eating up half the space of the house.

I agree with several who have said that MCM needs to be paired with other styles. The only room that feels comfortable to me is the kitchen (and maybe the bedroom). The other rooms all have hard or hard-looking seating. Even the couches, with their minimal padding, seem a little unwelcoming.

Don't get me wrong - one or two of these items in many spaces would be great, it's just that when there is nothing but these MCM furnishings, that the air gets sucked out fo the room a bit.

Also, the girl in the picture is certainly communing with nature in a bizarre way, and this is coming from someone who gets the urge to eat grass and leaves every once in a while. (Ha! I'm totally not afraid to say that since no one knows me!)

I lived in Japan for a while and have adopted that country's tradition of bringing a gift for the host family. On occasion I have cooked a meal for hosts rather than brought some other gift.

Pet peeve: leaving the bathroom nasty! I SO wish all guests were fastidious about not junking up the counter with their hairy brushes and rolled toothpaste tubes. Keep it in your toiletry kit, please! Also, hang those towels NEATLY, and don't get the bath rug all soaking wet! Also, put the durn seat and lid down. (Follow the hosts' lead on this one! If they put th elid down, YOU put the lid down.)

That said, I'm happy to tolerate this bathroom cleanliness issue to have people I love visit me.

Cool bookshelves!

Now, on to some suggestions for Apartment Therapy (not directed at Jess and George):
1. If you mention the home owners' pets, please post a picture or two, unless they have asked you not to do so. I look forward to the pet pictures and am disappointed when they don't appear. (Pics of cats on the home owners' walls don't count!)
2. I wonder why AT generally does not include a picture of the home owners, themselves? That, too, would be nice, as long as owners consented. Seeing the owners (or renters) helps put a name to a face, as it were. In other words, sometimes you can see that a home and its people "click."
3. How about a slideshow mode for your viewers? Or, how about slightly smaller pictures that fit on a screen without having to scroll down half an inch to see the bottom of every photo? (Maybe that's just my own computer issue.)
4. Finally, and most importantly, it would be so great if AT always, ALWAYS included a floor plan of the homes they showcase! Hand drawn, slightly-not-to-scale is no problem. Floorplans, along with good pictures, help us envision the spaces we are looking at.

Beautiful, light, airy home!

Is there a story behind the tiny UT longhorn and the orange wall? My husband has been threatening to paint an entire room UT rusty-orange. I've been reticent, but your bright orange wall is inspirational.

Cute idea. ...But I have to ask: who is the "we" in these posts? I KNOW not all the bloggers at AT are gathered around the AT computer saying, "You collect modern and vintage postcards, too?!" while someone else chimes in, "I've been collecting cartes postales for years and have them in a shoebox in the closet. I'm thinking of breaking them out to make an impromptu collage on a blank wall to help welcome in summer!!" C'mon, AT!! Your overuse of first person plural pronouns is driving me nuts! ( : (Ummm, yes I am an English teacher.)

Hooray for including a picture of yourself! I wish more people would do this. It makes the tours feel friendlier, more home-y, less like museums.

Hooray for Philly, and hooray for your home! Everyone has already said the other comments I thought of, with the exception of commenting on the bars outside the house. (I almost hate to bring attention to them because I know there's a group of "hostile-to-Philly-readers" out there in AT land, and mentioning the bars would just be fodder for their cause.) You've really done so well at making something functional and something that is often a necessity in a large city into something of beauty that transcends the original purpose. With the waves and the great color choices, they work seamlessly into the design of the building and they actually add character and charm to the front of your home. I think people will see them first as a design element, and only as security bars as an afterthought. Bravo for such a job well done! I wish I had seen your place when I lived there.

Please, please!! Where's the couch from, and what's the style name? It's gorgeous. ( : Thanks for a good tour, Matt. I like those vivid turquioses and purples against the neutral tones.

Beautiful blue couch and chairs in the living room! I saw your list of furniture sources, so it seems the couch must be from Ikea. Is that right?

I'm excited about the room divider and mobile ideas. I also have a set of these tobacco cards and have been mulling over how to display them. Maybe you could thread a thin piece of fishing wire through them - link the top of one card to the bottom of another, and so on.

Also, apparently, naked skinny gal = great design
Buff, bearded and clothed man = great design (or double standard)

Great idea, and as a former resident of Philadelphia, I'm especailly excited. ...However, I wish the beautiful neighborhood of West Philly had not been left off the list. Once that's added, I will be all over these prints! Someone above mentioned that maybe Brooklyn needs its own poster. Certainly. And I think West Philly could hold its own, too, along with several other Philly neighborhoods. Keep up the great work!

Here's the link to the neighborhoods print that I'm talking about: http://www.etsy.com/listing/45691685/neighborhood-philadelphia-hoods
