Another vote for brown. or gray or silver. I really think dark is your best bet here. black and white vertical stripes - wide, like 8 inches or a foot - could also work.
no cute or easter egg colors. You are, by definition, going to be embracing the pink, but that doesn't mean you should make it worse.

soup is typically, in my experience, the first or second course, not the main.

Buy, I see what you're getting at. I had some red been soup for dessert at a Chinese restaurant last night- a Chinese colleague had ordered for us. It was fine, but not something I'm rushing to make at home. It was warm, too! but still...

I like the idea of shelves or a picture rail - Hoyt Clagwell has it right. Acknowledge was it is and make it look good. if it annoys you in a year then you could do the plaster thing, but it seems like a lot of effort and you still wouldn't have a seamless look.
I think it could look really great though, with the shelf/ picture rail distracting from the different materials, and adding character and function to the room.
