Thanks everyone for the feedback! I was able to return the bed to the store with no problem except for the inconvenience of disassembling the bed and repacking it into the box. The store's employees were actually very nice about it. They said they've never had any complaints before, and said that it possibly could have been defective.

However, I don't think that was the case, because the width, which was the main problem, did match the stated dimensions for the King (a Cal King is even narrower, so the problem would have been even worse). Also, if you look at the instructions, it is pretty clear that the parts only fit one way and there is really no way to install the slats improperly. I have run the gamut on the possible causes for the misfit, but I really suspect that the frame is designed like this!

I ended up just exchanging the 2x2 for the tall wood frame and my mattress now fits perfectly. I was able to keep the same slats which also fit this frame.

@nicolson: do you have the 2x2 or a different west elm frame?
