My favorite gift was definitely cash. 6 people decided to us stuff they picked out, at least one complaining that registries are "too impersonal". They are friends of my in-laws who have never met me and haven't seen my husband in 15 years. Theirs was among the gifts we gave away because we honestly disliked what they gave and our apartment is too small for extra stuff. If they had known us at all, they would have seen how "us" the registry was since we used one of those 'universal' registries to register at any online store. Hellooooo thinkgeek.

I think registries can be really well done or simply stuff that was on a list of "recommended items". If you like camping, register for gear or whatever else you'll find fun and awesome.

While I agree it is an excellent book, 'How to Cook Everything' might be too much for someone starting out because it includes...everything.

My partner had only ever cooked scrambled eggs, boxed mac n cheese, and grilled cheese when we met. He has wanted to learn how to cook more but is really intimidated. It doesn't help that he's an engineer and immediately thinks about everything that could go wrong. Getting him 'The Science of Good Cooking' ended up being more fun for me and more intimidating for him, despite his being very science-oriented and excited about the concept of the book.

After a few (tense) attempts to walk him through my go-to recipes, we found that his biggest hangup was number of ingredients. We found a cook book called 5 igredient vegetarian gourmet (http://www.amazon.com/The-Vegetarian-5-Ingredient-Gourmet-Recipes/dp/076790690X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368716196&sr=8-1&keywords=5+ingredient+vegetarian) that he has really taken to. I'm not so sure about the "gourmet" aspect, but it's a good book to start out with so he can practice timing a few things at once and chopping a few things at once, before moving on to new techniques. Many of the recipes repeat ingredient in different configurations, which has been great for him because that means he can focus better on the new concepts.

Another one: leaving your knives sitting in water. I had a roommate who did this to my knives ALL THE TIME. He wasn't soaking stuff off, he just liked to cook a bunch of stuff and leave it soaking until most of it was taken care of because one of us would wash something in order to use it. I was gone for weeks at a time but I would sometimes see the same mess I had left behind. The knives were rendered useless relatively quickly.

Boston cream strata. Vanilla pudding layered many times with graham crackers and topped with a chocolate glaze-y frosting and left in the fridge overnight. Francy-looking and magic.

I have the prodyne pitcher (#3) . Its great at infusing, pretty, and sturdy. Also, the infuser tube unscrews for easy loading and cleaning. Its easy to use without the infuser as well.

I usually use, "How do you spend your time?" people who like their work/school tend to assume it's about work/school and people who aren't tend to answer with hobbies, trips, etc. I think is a good way to get a person talking since I'm rarely talking to them because of their job or hobby. I just want to talk to them.

For people whom have awkward responses to some of these, you can give a quick non-specific answer paired with a topic change will keep the conversation rolling and rolling away from whatever you don't feel like discussing. Eg. "Originally from Indiana. Do you watch Mad Men?" I think most people would assume you find Indiana boring or don't want to talk about it. They're just trying to talk, not take a census.

This sounds like a lovely post-passover drink. The thing about this vodka is that it's not even "conceivably kosher for passover but not certified". It's made from grain. Calling this a passover drink is like calling a BLT vegetarian. Sure, it's fine except for that one major ingredient.

It could have also been introduced as a lovely cocktail for spring.

I was burned by the cauliflower wings too! A turnip gratin was also a huge disappointment floating in a casserole dish of curdled dairy and bitter liquid.

I have this apron. It would be awesome if the mitt part were cut out but as they are it's like using folded cardboard wrapped in a kitchen towel. The only time they were effective is when I heat up the oven and then realize I need to adjust one or both of the shelves.

My rental kitchen is all white except for hideous, grey linoleum counters so I try to get colorful, fun kitchenware. My stand mixer will work just as well in any color but I hunted around for just the right one so I get a pop of color from that as well as a lovely bowl of seasonal fruit. I use colorful mugs to keep kitchen tools in. If you don't have the counter space for a fruit bowl, one of those tiered hanging baskets is both functional and a great display.

I also see these as being a good back-up for when you realize that you meant to pack a lunch last night but didn't. My schedule doesn't allow me to go to bed any earlier and my job won't let me come in later, so I've had many mornings like this in an area where my lunch options are greasy pizza or 7-11. I could see bringing a bunch of these and stashing them in the freezer at work (maybe hidden in a frozen peas bag) to have for such occasions.

Passover's restriction isn't on yeast (or its derivations) per se but on wheat, oats, barley, spelt and rye. Many people also avoid legumes, rice, corn and various spices. Chemical leavening is widely used throughout passover and theoretically you might be able to use yeast on passover (if it wasn't grown in a grain-based solution) but I don't know to what end.
