I don't think he's a snob for wanting to make certain food choices, I think he's a snob for denigrating peoples' choices to spend money on other things. I know that it was an example but picking on jarred baby food screams privilege on his part.

Passover's restriction isn't on yeast (or its derivations) per se but on wheat, oats, barley, spelt and rye. Many people also avoid legumes, rice, corn and various spices. Chemical leavening is widely used throughout passover and theoretically you might be able to use yeast on passover (if it wasn't grown in a grain-based solution) but I don't know to what end.

@Really? Americans use the term 'tank top' too. If I heard the term "sleeveless pullover" I'm not sure what I'd make of it. Maybe a sweater vest?

I like the ideas of a coral-ish or salmon color because you'll have a lot more choices for accents and it's more flexible if he decides another color is suddenly his favorite. Also, having an intense pink as a main color can feel overwhelming.

I think the article needs some reworking to emphasize that the list applies to not wanting to use these items without cooking them. The author mentions that in passing but it's not very clear. There are very few items I'd eat raw after defrosting, so frankly the list of what not to have raw after freezing seems pointless.

Anything in the spirit of debate (persuasive or otherwise) rather than conversation is generally a bad idea. I came to enjoy a meal and light conversation, not have someone try to change or simply insult my views on food, politics, movies or whatever.

I would also argue that tofu and seitan are ingredients in their own right and not simply a meat replacement. They *can* be used to replace meat in a dish but the same could be said for beans, mushrooms, lentils, bulghur wheat, etc if you take the approach of "here's my protein, over here's my starch, and over there are are my veggies".

That said, The Post Punk Kitchen has never let me down.

My friend's parents have an elevator in their house. I used it once for novelty value but it was way too slow to use again. However, the fact that they have an elevator means they have not needed to move to another house or a nursing home because one spouse lost mobility. I don't know if they could have added a chairlift to their spiral staircase.

It's too bad this post didn't go up two weeks ago, when Tu b'Shvat happened. Tu b'Shvat seders are the tastiest seders. The symbolic foods of Passover and Rosh Hashannah (yes, there's a seder for RH too but it's primarily practiced by Sefardim) are well entrenched and meaningful but not as fun to just pop in your mouth or look at (whole ram's head, anyone?)

Dumplings of various stripes. When I was studying for the bar exam, I was ever so grateful for my stash of East Asian-ish dumplings and pierogies. I used pre-made wrappers for the former and cooked them in a microwave steamer or dropped them into broth with veggies. You need less filling than you think, so it's a great way to use up odds and ends.

The pierogies called for a simple dough that used sour cream as the binder and filled them with mashed potatoes, shredded cheese and sauteed onions. They only take a few minutes from freezer to mouth and you don't have to decide portion sizes ahead of time.

For a picnic, you'll want a finger food. I'd suggest summer rolls. They rely on fresh veggies but with a good sauce (I use a peanut sauce), veggies that are only so-so are delicious. Fresh cilantro will also pep them up.

Do not use for curries!!!
I bought some Coco Lopez once, not realizing what it was, and tried to make a curry with it. Bad, bad results. There is so much sugar that everything thickened into a syrup pretty quickly. Carrots, sweet potatoes, and chickpeas coated in curry syrup are not tasty.
I then made the mistake of letting this horrid concoction cool in the pan while I ate something else that I had on hand. It was nearly solid within 30 minutes and I had to fill the pan with water and boil it in order to get it clean.

In Holland, people will say "fris" or "fris drank" (fresh/fresh drink) but that also includes chocolate milk, juices or things masquerading as juices.

I would find seltzer confusing because I've only heard it in the context of carbonated water, sometimes with a bit of flavoring. I also find calling all carbonated drinks "Coke".

I got a large container of green tea and I simply don't like green tea, nor can I find someone else who does. Instead, I used it to make clay masks and hair rinses. I don't know if it helps but I've never noticed any negative effects and it makes me feel like I'm fancy, spa treatments.

I made this last night and it was a huge hit. I'm vegetarian, so I made a few changes. In addition to omitting the bacon, I forgot to add the thyme. I included a few hearty shakes of liquid smoke in the cooking liquid and crumbled feta into the finished dish. Also, I used canned beans so I simmered the beans in the cooking liquid without removing half the onion mixture for about 10 minutes before adding the pasta.

No experience cooking them together but the colander I have would work well to easily separate the the two. It has round holes, rather than slits, so quinoa will go right through with the oats staying put.

I agree with the forcing yourself outside while well bundled up. I grew up with winter being in the mid 40s but now live somewhere much colder and it took me a while to find out what an amazing job a long down coat can make.

I eat a lot of grapefruit. They are delicious this time of year and the scent cheers me up.

That doesn't help most apartment dwellers, who don't have the ability (or much incentive) to make structural improvements to their building. We're stuck with radiators that only know one setting: furnace. Our neighbors seem to keep their heat on enough to keep us warm most of the time. Occasionally, we turn on the radiator in the living room so that the bedroom is bearable. I truly wish I knew enough robotics to program something to turn on my radiator just before we get up. Until then, it's fluffy slippers and a hoodie next to my bed.
