SO much better! I love that little side chair, but as the other readers pointed out it might look better without. And I love your shutters as is :) Great job!

Living Room Layout Challenge:
What Would You Do?

8/2/12 8:39 AM

First off, I have to tell you that I still have your house bookmarked as one of my absolute favorite AT tours. Your home is GORGEOUS, your antique pieces are amazing, the architectural details are stunning, and it's clear that you've put a lot of love and thought into decorating it.

You have gotten so much helpful bits of advice here...gotta love the AT community! I'm not sure if I will really add to it, but here are my thoughts...

Our house has a very similar layout. The parlor (aka your living room) is to the left, followed by living room and then the kitchen in the back. We use that room (your living room) as a parlor/dining room because the layout isn't conducive to a living room: the wall facing street has big windows and a huge radiator, the next wall has a faux fireplace, and the other two walls are open to other rooms=nowhere to put a sofa or a tv (we refuse to mount a tv over the fireplace).

Our neighbor has an identical row house and she has it set up as you have, but we felt that the first room should really be used as a parlor/dining room. When people walk in we wanted our "wow" pieces to be the first thing you saw, versus a living room with a tv. We have a dining table in the center of the room parallel to the fireplace (so you can still see it), a hutch to the right of the fireplace, an antique bench on the left of the fireplace, an antique chair in the corner to the left of the huge radiator, and a victrola in the opposite corner. I understand why you chose the other room as your dining room since it's next to the kitchen, but would you consider flipping the two rooms?

If you really don't want to do that, the first thing is that you have too many pieces in there right now, so I would start by taking them all out so you can see the room.
I actually loved your antique sofa in that nook, now it looks too cluttered. Do you still have the two bergere chairs on the opposite wall? I would try putting two chairs where the sofa currently is (would they fit on either side of radiator?), and then put the petrie sofa across from them. I love the idea of pairing the bergeres with the sofa versus the two petries, but either could work, depending on the size. I also like the idea of a round coffee table in between for easier flow. I have to say that I don't think you should put sofa in front of fireplace, you don't want to block it.

Whatever you do please update the post and let us know how it turned out! :)

I agree with everyone-please do more of these posts! I went into Anthropologie the other day and as much as I covet some of their things (love their hardware) I just can't spend the money. Sure I can afford a couple of $8 knobs, but when I need 10 of them.. no way! As Pippigirl said above I also use them as an idea source. I just go home and search on ebay and etsy to find similar pieces. Thank you for this post and MORE PLEASE!!

Love that sofa, nice choice! Definitely neutral..I'm thinking jute grey tones. West elm has nice ones (although the price has gone up significantly since I purchased mine 2 years ago). I went with the basic jute which you could buy anywhere (overstock has better prices) or if you do go to west elm their chevron knot rug looks gorgeous (but is on the higher end).

I would also recommend Crate &Barrel if you were able to fanagle a way there. A sofa is such a big investment so you shouldn't limit yourself to a couple of places if you can help it.
I got the Oasis sofa and it's AMAZING..granted it was more than I wanted to pay but you can get good sales there..another model I loved was the "lounge sofa" -that one is often on sale and reviews are amazing. Now that I've gone slipcover I don't see myself going back :)
Sidebar-can you divulge your secret for preenting your kitties from scratching? I've pretty much kept my two off our sofa by putting jute scratch poles in front and blankets on side, but they sometimes scratch my ikea chairs I paid $30 bucks for so I don't get crazed about it. Would love any other advice...and good luck on your sofa hunt!

Agreed. Regardless of how pretty some of their products are I just can't support Anthropologie, especially for clothing that (in my opinion) does not warrant the pricepoint.
Re: furniture I would rather buy real antiques or support a local artisan...e.g so many great artists on etsy!

Loving the comments here..makes me feel better about my morning (see earlier post) but still annoyed I got up so early. I have to add that the ebaying disgusts me, and I am an ebay seller myself-Lady J summed it up perfectly. It's just not right, and although I would like a throw I will not be buying one on ebay.

The funniest thing I heard what when one of the "ladies" from the city asked a Target employee to get her a cart, to which she politely responded "Carts are up front."

I got to my local Target (Jersey City) at 745 am and there were already 30 people in line, 99% of them from Manhattan. As I stood in line watching people getting out of their car services I thought to myself, is this really worth it? It was entertaining to listen to the line banter.."I've never been here before, where are we again? " As soon as the door opened a bunch of people BOLTED down the aisles and grabbed whatever they could from the endcaps. All I really wanted was a throw and I never even caught a glimpse, and as soon as I saw the pandemonium ensue I knew it wasn't worth it.

I loved the Lounge sofa from Crate and Barrel but it was a bit too large for my living room (at 46" deep). Instead I went with the C & B Oasis sofa (42" deep) and I could NOT be happier. It's the most comfy couch I've ever sat on and is beautiful to boot...all my guests ask where I got it from. Love it!

Our two girls (sisters) love hairbands...so much that they reach for them on my arm when I'm wearing. I try to hide them (since I'm down to only a few now!) and just this morning one of them sniffed it out from under my pillow. They can easily wrap them around their paw so they can proceed to throw it around or into baskets so they can later dig out. Whenever we do a major vacuum job that requires moving furniture we find a pile of them underneath in the dustbunny pile. In terms of store bought toys they love the Cat Dancer..the BEST and cheapest toy in the world!! Attn all cat owners: if you do not have a cat dancer you must run, not walk, to the nearest pet store!

They actually use the catbed I bought them along with their mini kitty condo-probably cause it's level with the window so they have a view. They're also a big fan of laying on magazines-on tables, beds, floors, wherever.

One also loves to scoop the dry food out onto the floor, and they both refuse to drink water from a bowl near the food. We have to keep a separate water bowl upstairs in the bedroom-which is better than us having to let them drink from the faucet when they were babies. Got them out of that habit real quick when I was constantly cleaning the bathroom. However we can't keep a glass of water out or they'll go right to it-which led me to switch to a sealed travel mug next to bed at night.

Whatever makes them happy :)

When we moved into our newly purchased (first) home two years ago my male cat of 14 years (RIP) took a turn for the worse and peed all over the concrete basement floors & walls..daily..for a year. We've been trying to eradicate the smell since with various enzyme cleaners and then the ole peroxide & baking soda solution. Because it's such a large area we haven't done multiple dosings yet (it's extremely daunting, to say the least, esp with no results) & we're starting to lose hope that we will ever get rid of the smell. It's especially bad when it rains or is humid. My husband just wants to paint over it with a sealer but I think we should try the baking soda/peroxide solution again first-otherwise I'm worried it will just cover it for a bit and then return. Have any of you had a similar experience that you could share? We'll take any suggestions at this point..thanks!

I saw this in the CB2 catalog and was SO stoked to check it out..that being said , completely disappointing in person.
I really liked the slipcovered fabric and the shape of it, & I loved the options of mixing up the pillows. However, as soon as you sit on it you realize it's NOT well made-the cushion squooshes down so there's about an inch of foam between your tush and the frame (yes I just said squoosh and tush in the same sentence). It also didn't feel fell sturdy-the legs felt wobbly. When I asked who the vendor was the salesperson was vague-she said it's made in Carolina (DUH). I asked her if Lee was the manufacturer and she said no, another company.... I didn't press it after that but I just got a weird vibe. I thought I had found a great piece for a decent price (sigh)...I'm going with my first love (although above what I though I would pay)-the Oasis from Crate & Barrel. I now know why it's so much more $$ than the Movie sofa- world of difference in quality. If I were to go lower end I'd just get the Klippan, but since this will be my main sofa it's worth the splurge.
